Dude, counter culture means counter culture, not counter politics. It has nothing to do with conservative/liberal. It's ANYTHING which goes against the mainstream - the sanctioned stuff. When the pagans were still running around worshipping nature, those new fangled Christians brought a counter culture seen as very restrictive. When Buddha introduced his archly ascetic ideology to a fairly free-wheeling Hindu populace, it most certainly wasn't regarded as liberal!

Your inability to accept any but a certain ideological iteration of counter culture, shows you don't really understand what it is. You're actually using only your own traditionalist interpretation - thus confirming your traditionalism yet again.

I think we do it because we are the biggest of the European nations and a nuclear power. We were drug into two European wars, both in which we weren't ready for. I think that made us think, if we are going to stop future European wars, we need to be strong and need to set up a European block that will work together to defend ourselves. Thus NATO was born. But yes, being the big boy on the block does give us some clout.
