At least you acknowledge that on planet earth that the international community and the international rules based order does not lend a helping hand to America. It's quite the one-way affair, isn't it?

Nobody is defending the insurer. Yet, you make this seem simple when you know, in fact, it will not be simple.

Just wait and see how everyone responsible will try to wiggle out from paying and try to drag this out for as long as they can.

That whole "jobs Americans won't do" crap is a conspiracy theory by Keith Olbermann, etc many of those left wing columnists with not even an appreciable understanding of economics. You wanna know the real reason Americans won't do those jobs?

Time, travel and distance between Urban and rural areas:
    https://www.brookings.edu/articles/...ween-people-and-jobs-in-metropolitan-america/

Alot of this of course also impacts with the prices at the pump, etc which would eat into their working paychecks. These economic challenges do not of course give any weight to the conspiracy that Americans don't want to work good jobs.

Wait, do immigrants pay less for gas or have a shorter commutes to these jobs than Americans? That doesn't make sense. This is not a good explanation as to why all of these six workers doing the very hard and dangerous job of bridge maintenance, working the night shift, were imigrants.

We can see here that at the very least, farming jobs and construction work is at the top of the list. Now as for why these immigrants typically get these jobs, think about where they usually locate: At ports or farming areas, etc(see: IE: Texas).

They, by virtue of their unfortunate circumstances ironically are at the front of the line. The Pa with a couple of tykes on the other hand, might want to get into construction, but the construction site might be say 8 miles away, and the commute cost back and forth starts to eat into his wallet.

So, is anybody responsible for protecting critical infrastructure from such a very foreseeable catastrophe?

White American born folks don't like hard, physical work. Why do you think farm hands, construction workers, laborers, etc are predominantly not white folks?

No one "likes" hard physical work. Everyone avoids it whenever there is better alternative.
You know, like the poor and desperate, or slaves wherever that has been an option

Lincoln was known for his ability to engage in prolonged hard physical labor.

“My father taught me to work, but not to love it. I never did like to work, and I don't deny it. I'd rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh — anything but work.” Abraham Lincoln

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about, with all due respect.

Hispanics make up much of the labor force in the construction sector now, precisely because they will do the work white and black people won’t do any more. That has been my direct personal experience and those of my colleagues and competitors. They’re better workers too.

The only other bridge of a similar length that I can recall having been built recently was the Mario Cuomo bridge replacing the Tappan Zee bridge that carries the NY Thruway across the Hudson River. They built two new four lane structures parallel to the old Tappan Zee bridge which continued to carry traffic during construction.

The plan was approved September 2012, construction began October 2013 and it was completed September 2018. So construction required 5 years, and this did not include any preliminary work to remove the old bridge. Nor does it include the proposal phase prior to 2012.

    The cost was $3.14 Billion.

I would think that one would also want to build a new parallel structure to replace the Francis Scott Key. It seems like a poor idea to just replace the middle while continuing to use the approach structures from the 1970s. This would also expedite construction by allowing a faster start, rather than waiting for demolition of the old bridge

Depending on the level of negligence should government officials be immune from personal liability for their failure to modify the bridge to protect it from such a foreseeable catastrophe?

Probably should not be, but any attempt to hold government officials liable would likely be fruitless.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel was built with tunnels specifically so that a bridge failure would not cut off access to Norfolk and Hampton Roads. And there have been incidents of collisions with the bridges that have closed the bridge for days.

Did anyone else hear that the ship’s black box stopped recording at crucial moments?

So you have proven my point, White Americans born here do not want to do the hard, back breaking, labor work that immigrants are more than happy to do.

I saw an interview with a former ship captain and he said when the diesel generators go out then battery power kicks in. If that goes out the data recorders have uninterruptible power supplies to keep them going. I worked in a field that used UPSs and they were called ZTTs for zero transfer time, meaning if power went down, the UPS instantaneously kicked in with no noticeable down time, not even for a split second. The same captain also said the data recorders on this ship had no data for few vital minutes. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

    From the NYT:

Gee, were they legal or illegal, being exploited in the workplace?

You do realize that since we have to pay federal taxes also, then we are still going to be "docked higher taxes" for this thing that is out of our control, right?

Our import/export ratio has no actual bearing on this. We could still be exporting more than we import, and this could well have happened. The only real difference in the traffic would be incoming vs outgoing. The ships would still have to come in to bring the imports and then leave to take the exports with them. Not to mention that not all the cargo ships that use the harbor there are international. Many move cargo from one US port to another.

From that is a quote from somewhere, we need a source. Otherwise I have to assume you made it up. Right now, we have no way of knowing if hey are talking the daily overage for the bridge (which I doubt) or the area, or nationally.

It should be noted that the CBBT is privately owned and operated while the Bay Bridge (further north via US), as well as the FSK bridge is owned by the state of Maryland.

Should’t these ships have horns or sirens? When they radioed their distress, aren’t they also supposed to give a few horn blasts ?
