There are many names for a worldwide tax on financial transactions, e.g. "Tobin Tax", "Financial Transactions Tax" (FFT), etc. Belgium is in strong favour of this kind of tax, and my country is determined to impose this tax upon the world. My country, Belgium, is determined to impose this tax upon the world together with France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, South Korea to name but a few. All I can say, is that when Belgians get something in their head we will get it. Our diplomats are the best in the world -- afterall, as a small country, they are our first and last line of defense. Anyhow, the tax would be about 0,05% of the entire amount that is being transferred. So if a financial institution transfers e.g. an amount of €1 million, they would pay a tax of €500 (1 000 000/100 = 10 000/0,05). Peanuts. Some propose a tax of only 0,005% -- but I think that's too small to have a sustantial effect (to encourage real economic growth and stimulate the financial sector to actual make real investments instead of engaging in to much financial hocus-pocus). Leterme: "Tax on financial transactions" Tax on financial transactions voted in the European Parliament (March 9, 2011)[/ So, what say you. Is this is a good idea? Why? Or why not, of course! Vote in the poll please. I for one can't wait for this tax to be introduced, and maybe to meet the more richer countries -- some of the tax could also be used for when disaster strike beyond imagination strikes, e.g. hurricanes, earthqueakes, tsunamis,...etc. So, what say so. Oh, and try to don't get ideology in the way too.
Peanuts? That sounds like a month's pay for one worker if the company is transferring payroll money from, say, Belgium to India. So tell us, Jan, what right does some parasitic, tax leeching bureaucrat for a global government have to the money that is passed between employer and worker, or even to put workers out of jobs so he can push papers around?
Governments are the #1 cause for genocide, tyranny, and general (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) baggery. I am sick of empowering government by giving them more money. What exactly has the UN done to earn such a source of revenue, what do they spend their money on that serves the people?
Can't happen because it would require US consent, and no US politician could possibly survive the fall-out of voting for it.
Well, in America we have that pesky little thing known as sovereignty. Might get in the way of your evil little plan.
So the taxpayers already have to support the deadbeat liberals here in the US, and now you think we should support them throughout the world? lol
The world is not taxing you. This is not about you or most of us little fish. Get over yourself! This is about big financial transactions. What's €500 on €1 000 000? Peanuts.
Where do you think Mr Tobin comes from? I'm sorry but your post is the embodiement of typical American politics.
Then, I say Belgium must be destroyed. Just kidding, I know this guy doesn't speak for Belgium. He's probably in a CA university office right now. .
That has nothing to do with it, the UN couldn't tax us without both houses passing bills allowing it and the president signing off on it. If that happened everyone who voted for the bill and the president will have committed career suicide. I don't care where Mr. Tobin is from, it has absolutely no bearing on the argument.
Sorry, but a lot of you people are outright fools unable of seeing the bigger picture. This tax will not hamper any job creation, in fact it will create sustainable job creation. You people see "tax" and go all bonkers. This is not about paying a tax on your pension, wage, etc. This is about big corporations transferring ENORMOUS amounts of money -- such big amounts that you are not able to grasp them properly. This isn't about "sovereignty" either -- WTF? I forgot who said that. That's just dumb. Sorry for my words, but it bloody is. I didn't yet realized that corpoartions had "sovereignty".
You're a fool for not seeing that nothing gets through the UN without US approval. The US government will never give that approval because their careers would end immediately. We don't like big government, and we despise global government.
This is not about "big government" or "global government", in fact this is not about "government" at all. Where do you get this idea from? This is about doing what is right, just, good, efficient and effective. The tax will come -- we will ram it through the US' throat if needed.
What on Earth? "this guy isn't speaking for Belgium". I just quoted our PM in front of the General Assembly in NYC.
It is about big government, what do you think all that tax money is going to fund? And ram it through our throats? How do you plan on doing that? You do realize we're on the security council and you aren't right? Or are you going to do it militarily? I'd love to hear details.
Uhm,... OK -- I see you're not informed. First of all, you are funding anyone except for yourselves. And we're not the ones facing bankruptcy either. Secondly, do you really think an other entity can't force the USA to lift or abolish taxes?
Im sorry but europe does not dictate our tax policies, we do. You guys go ahead with your little collection fund. We'll stay here and watch it go nowhere.
Yes we do dictate your tax policies, the example is clear. Your failure to see the bigger picure is mindblowing. Which is even making me more determined to support every effort to strip the US from any sort of supremacy she still holds. The US seems unable and unwilling to lead. You folks have become a shadow of yourselves. Sad. Collection fund? This is about reaching the MDG's -- reaching them is of the highest importance for us all.
There is no bigger picture. Fact is the US is a huge contributor already to the UN. No politician, not even a neocon would ever suggest we pay this tax.
Are you a multi-millionaire? Do you transfer millions every day? Who is this "we" you speak of? I guess it's your imaginary friend? Enough with your little rethortic already.
