I do agree that it is probably counterproductive for the average person who is not an evangelical, but I would imagine it would pull in a lot of business from the local evangelicals...

My response would be the same. I'd do the quote for a discount. $26 off is worth it.

I suppose if one wanted to they could quote John 3:16 for the discount and then that would have sparked the Biblical discussion, where if one really wanted to they could bring up all those nastier Biblical verses iJoeTime mentioned and start discussing them as well. That's all it's about right? Sparking Biblical discussion while you get an oil change?

Probably wouldn't be an issue. I never see anybody walk up to somebody at a football game holding up a sign JOHN 3:16 and start quoting other verses.

This is interesting. It strikes me as discrimination based on irrelevant criteria. But I don't know if it's really that bad because people like you and me could just not go to his place of business. What if a Muslim had decided you needed to quote part of the Koran and you would get a discount? Or a Mormon forcing someone to quote the Book of Mormon? It seems like many Christians would be crying foul. Plus why did the man pay 46 dollars for an oil change? That is just bad business. I usually pay around 20-25 dollars, without any "Christian" discount :p.

I agree with this. It's annoying that people get so offended. If you don't want to do it, go someplace else. There are plenty of other places to get your oil changed.

If he is charging some people less then he is charging other people more. What if I charge blacks more and whites less.

The guy requires John 3:16 which of course states that those who believe in Christ get to go to Heaven.

So Jews have to say that to get the same price as Christians?

The specific verse states you shall believe in Jesus to get to Heaven. What if you don't believe it and it goes against your religious belief? I think most religions forbid you speaking the beliefs of other religions.

No loss to me, a loss to the guy who owns the place. But I still don't see how this squares with the law. Could I make a homosexual read a card that says homosexuality is a sin and a bad lifestyle in order to get a discount? Could I offer a discount to women who recant their belief that woman should be equal in the workplace?

If he required people to read a card saying blacks are inferior that would be OK too?

So forcing Jews to say that only Christians get to heaven in order to get equal treatment is OK?

No, that's how you're choosing to see it. He isn't charging some people more than others, he's giving a discount to some based on his own select criteria whereas he would be within his right to charge everyone full price. BTW, you're proposing a direct violation of the civil rights act by charging blacks and whites at two different rates. But it's funny you bring that up because very recently some UC Berkley students held a bake sale and charged everyone differently according to race. It was a demonstration to protest the affirmative action policies of the college in charging different admissions according to racial quotas. They certainly got some attention.

Religious discrimination is no different from Racial discrimination under the law.

Yes charging one person more than the other, or less than the other, same difference.

    Yes a similar point.

Well good luck for making the case for religious discrimination. People aren't even being asked their religion before they get service. If you knew anything about civil rights law, you'd understand that this is the lynch pin that determines whether or not discrimination is taking place.

No it isn't. If you have a regular price, then people pay that regular price, or they get a discount if you see fit to give it to them. Nobody's being discriminated against until somebody is charged higher than the regular price.

If the practice turns away people with other other religious views because of the religious act it is................

Yes it is you are charging people more than others based on a religious act.

Why would anyone do business with someone who is attempting to capitalize on the Bible and their religious belief anyway, I didn't think Christians were suppose to do that.

    It's a DEAL!

Are you saying businesses aren't allowed to offer deals now?

LOL, this is a funny topic. Atheists are soooooo afraid they're gonna miss out on something when in actuality, a discounted oil change is the very least of the things they need to be worried about.

    Read John 3:16.

Yes and the deal is those who recite Christian religious tenet get a lower price. Those who cannot do so because of their religious or moral beliefs have to pay more.

No they don't! They have to pay regular price!

If I'm using a coupon and forget it at home, is the business required to give me the discounted price anyway?

No, you have to go along with the terms of the sale. Don't want to, or CAN'T, then you pay regular price.

It's really not that complicated, B'guy. You're just trying to make a point that's not there.

You know what's ironic is that some idiot atheist will spend almost an hour arguing with the owner over his policy. That's a whole hour he'll never get back. Atheists must get steamed when their time is wasted because they believe they will be annihilated after death; they'll just wink out of existence, so stealing time from them is stealing a swiftly vanishing and irreplaceable commodity.

I'm so glad I'm Christian, my mind set at ease by an eternal perspective.

Reminds me of something my preacher talked about recently... Christians using their faith to market goods & services. His example was a new 'Christian' dating service that's been running ads on TV. They seem to be saying they can help you find the one God intends you to be with. He warned about businesses like that and reminded us that people marketing their beliefs isn't necessarily the same thing as practicing their beliefs!

    I could see his point.

But this example isn't the same thing. The business owner is actually rewarding people for their faith. I can't see a single thing wrong with that. In fact, John 3:16 is one of my favorite verses. I'd be happy to recite it for a discounted anything!
