My statement is logical and correct. All great civilizations had values derived from the belief of a higher power. Ancient Rome and Greece was built on values derived from their beliefs in their gods. Western civilization was built on Values of Christianity and a belief in God. Judeo-Christian values and the laws based on them may whither in time, but it still supports Western civilization and Israel today. Even free Asia countries stand with values put in place ages ago derived from a belief in a higher power.

North Korea and China and past USSR is all we have to give us an idea of a society that tore down past values and replaced with Atheistic values.

 

the “higher power” concept existed because back then people needed an explanation for how things worked. It was coincidental, not a part of why those societies grew. Belief in magic doesn’t do a society any good, it’s a placeholder for how the world actually works. There’s over 2k different deities, none of whom have lifted a finger to actually have an effect.

 

By that metric we should compare the Middle East and Africa — some of the most religious places on Earth.

There is a religious section on the forums, in case you weren't aware of it. That's where people can air out their religious dogma and theology to display and discuss the entire spectrum of the art of staring at your navel.

 

Seems like belief in a higher power has been crucial to the existence of great and small civilizations...every single civilization that we know of....was created and based on that concept. To say we are better then Romans and all civilizations before us is truly an untested and arrogant theory since we are still living within judeo-Christian values.

I didn't mean to say all belief systems were equal...just that belief in a higher power is key to holding a nation together.
As more Islamic peoples migrate into Europe that religious population will over take and override the non religious population's value system. Atheism doesn't have the strength and will. ... unless it goes totaltarian.

Makes sense. It was a Hellenic practice at the time for men to have sexual relationships with boys. I don't know why they did it, but that's how it was. I'm sure it was quite a culture shock for people of other cultures that didn't have that when the Greeks showed up! And that would explain these texts from that period of history even bringing the topic up.

It's just a shame that Christianity continues to be based in Iron Age social and moral values. The world is being held back by this nonsense, and countless people have been made to suffer and die over it.

You are saying these cultures developed because of religion, I showed several examples of the opposite. Societies will naturally try to find meaning in things they do not understand but that does not mean religion is the reason they grew.

Your view that the only way a society can exist with atheism is totalitarianism is not backed up by fact.

 

Cultural development without religion is still because of religion. It is the antithesis.

Correlation is not causation. These days the most religious societies are the least productive and the most problematic as they choose mysticism over science and reason. while some people may choose a religion, it’s not a requirement and those same “values” began with the code of hammurabi.

 

You showed examples of countries founded based on the values of a higher power belief system, that still have those values ingrained and that carry a population increasingly turning agnostic. That isn't showing the value of "no religion". Atheism doesn't build societies unless it's totaltarian. It can sprout and grow in a free environment already laid out by a stronger force.

All of human society was founded on the belief in false gods — 20 thousand variations and counting. As they develop and understanding grows, religion can be cast aside as the fantasy that it is.

Wishful thinking. I think it's more logical to assume we were created with a spiritual void and a need to fill it. Leaving it empty is destructive and unhealthy. Whether you be a human being or whether we are talking about a society it seems that religion is crucial.

 

Wanting understanding is a basic human desire — it in no way is wishful thinking.

What is though, is believing your chosen version of thousands of Gods that have existed is the correct one or that anyone else needs it as “critical”. Atheism would not be growing as rapidly as it was if it was.

I can understand why people want something to explain their suffering or the suffering they see around them, that no matter how bad or good their lives are they will be able to retire in paradise while everyone they hate burns. That their life doesn’t simply end.
