The reality of something is based on what society believes it is, rather than what it actually is. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in stories like these. A girl is not a girl as long as she believes she's not. It doesn't matter what the reality of the situation is, it's completely based on perception and belief.

 

Even if you recognize sex changes, everyone should be able to agree that SEVEN YEARS OLD is too young.

Why would anyone believe what this young child would say in a matter like this? Demonstrably she is a girl. Claiming to be anything else is fantasy. If we are to encourage the belief that a child has the mental capacity to change the demonstrable facts.....we're writing precedents that may come up later under other dangerous conditions.


Tell that child she doesnt know what shes talking about when she says she loves Mr Smith next door...who is 57? You've already reinforced that her feelings cant be wrong. You cant then claim she doesnt know enough to know if she loves Mr Smith, because shes a child.

If you have not raised and lived with this particular child, how you you possibly claim to know what is best for this child? "Demonstrably?" An educated guess would be that the parents are not just making decisions based upon "demonstrable" physical atributes, but also taking the "demonstrable" behavioral patterns into consideration. As I stated I my previous post, It's just a name change which can easily be reversed if the child wants to down the road at puberty. The article says that the child feels better already with just this simple name change.

We don't bring our children to a vet when they claim they are a dog or cat and we shouldn't encourage children to live outside of reality.

 

If she has gender identity disorder, though it's probably too early to tell, then she is a girl physically and a boy mentally. It's a genuine, real disease in which one's body develops one route, and their brain chemistry, hormones etc. grow the other route. Some kids may fantasize or make unrealistic claims, but some kids actually have the brain development of the wrong sex.

Cure? Are you implying that this is wrong? And are you also implying that you can cure homosexuality and heterosexuality as well? This is who the child is, and thank god the parents are so supportive in a society that is so closed-minded and judgmental. I have to admit that society as a whole is getting slightly more tolerant, but not as quickly as I would like. I have a friend who is a lesbian and knew she was at a very young age. Her parents made her go to a conversion camp -- needless to say, it FAILED. It only made her feel worse about how she NATURALLY felt, and she felt like she was broken. Why can't we accept people for who they are instead of trying to convert them into what WE think is RIGHT?
