If the Persians invented it, how did someone else invent it 1400 years later?

My brother had his aorta replaced by a graduate of Baghdad Medical School who has developed a technique to do this successfully at the rate of several per week. My brother now has dacron running from his heart down into his legs, with an artificial valve and numerous connections to feed his spine, internal organs, etc., as just about everything comes off your aorta.

The human body can't stand being without blood profusion for anywhere NEAR the length of time for such an operation, so it requires multiple heart lung machines running at all times to infuse various sections of the body as the work commences. It also requires significant body cooling, meticulous blood pressure maintenance, involving measures in addition to just systolic and diastolic and care of organs that go through trauma. After the operation he was leaking blood through the numerous blood vessel grafts at a rate that was close to the maximum speed of adding blood to his system - requiring pumping blood from his body to be rapidly cleaned and reinfused, along with additions to help volume - a process that was going on as they began bringing him up to temperature and out of deep anesthesia, helping his kidney function and other organs. Coagulation is a huge issue, as if it is too low, leaks continue but if it's too high, clots will kill.

Before this operation, my brother had to keep his blood pressure so low that he sometimes couldn't get out of bed - lest his aorta rupture.

Today, a year later, he's going on 40 mile bike rides. Without this operation, the docs said he would not be with us this Thanksgiving.

If you ask me, that isn't an invention - it's a miracle.

    Leave race out of it!

If it is acceptable for the media to constantly remind us that men commit most crimes, we should remember that most geniuses are also men.

Has anything been "invented" in the last 50 years. Most "inventions" are really just improvements on previous "inventions". So your question is not possible to answer.

Umm . . . the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. He was white, at least that is what my search turns up. What version of history did you make this claim from?

Well, I wish the rest of the world would get up on the task of coming up with some new antibiotics, because ours are barely working anymore thanks to their wide-spread use. It doesn't matter if the white man continues his contribution to the field of Western medicine, or if Persians, blacks, Indians--whomever--we just need some new drugs. One of the biggest global concerns right now (they won't tell you this) is the growing number of drug resistant bugs like the drug-resistant Tuberculosis bug, and the drug- resistant Staph bug. Last year 10 million people (that we know of) fell ill with TB, and 2 million died from it. One-third of the world is believe to be infected with TB but show no symptoms--yet. Forget fancier cell phones or faster computers, we need better drugs.

What you describe sounds like quite a medical achievement. It took many people working on the many different aspects of this procedure to make it work. Dacron has been used for heart surgery since the 1970's, with Crommie Harry holding one of the patents for the use of Dacron in heart surgery. Some of the other patent holders involved in the development of this procedure include Jack Love and Tammi Klaco who both used Dacron in their patented procedures in 1995. Other names are Charles Baily who performed the first mitral valve repair in 1948; Hugh Sharkey, John Ashely, Stuart Edwards, Alexander Kairkhahan, Bruno Reichart, Christian Weinhold. There are others.

The white man has been demonized by just about everyone; and now people are manipulating the truth about their almost exclusive contributions to the advancement of Western medicine. I, for one, refuse to let that happen. People all over the world are living longer and healthier lives because of Western medicine, the foundations of which came about through the hard work and genius of the white man--and a few white women.

    Ask, and you shall receive!

American scientists have made a major health breakthrough with the discovery of a new type of antibiotic that seems to be even better than existing drugs. And it was found in a pile of soil.

The experimental antibiotic, called teixobactin, is being touted as a “game changer” and is very good news considering the number of infections which have evolved to become resistant to existing antibiotics.

The discovery was made by researchers at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts who outlined their findings in the science journal Nature on Wednesday. It is the first time in 25 years that a major new antibiotic discovery has been made.

Old science of Byzantium, which the Muslims appropriated and then destroyed. The Renaissance came about when the Muslims sacked Constantinople and the scholars there fled West to Italy. Muslims made some trivial advancements over the old Greek science, and have been dining out on these trivial discoveries for 700 years now. The Western Europeans, reintroduced to their heritage from ancient Greece, have led humanity forward ever since.

It is a wonder to me that a bunch of pirates should have founded the greatest civilization the world has ever seen, or might ever see if the Muslims have their way. But that is the way of it.

Fortunately, the Chinese seem to appreciate Western culture (someone mentioned Chinese violinists playing Western music.) So even if the West succumbs to Islamic barbarism the heritage will be carried on by other hands.

Islam is the single greatest blight on history.

Your first post is written as if it is only western medicine that has helped people live longer then your previous post talks about antibiotics. The power of antibiotics were first used in the Middle East - not "white man"

We could look at the Nobel Prize winners in science.

I know that white, American males invented artificial light and the telephone. White males seem to be involved in most advancements.

Really? Then why do Middle Easterners have to take antibiotics from the West? So many things conveniently contributed to the Middle Easterners. It is interesting that with all their ancient technological prowess, their current live-styles depend on Western technology. The most important antibiotic ever discovered was penicillin, and it was discovered by Alexander Fleming.

Come on. If Middle Easterners were the inventors of the foundations of everything we use today, including antibiotics, then their dark ages--when they seemed to have forgotten everything--lasted a lot longer than the European dark ages. If the Middle Easterners used to be great inventors, and scientists then Islam must be the cause of their extremely long dark-ages, because we have got nothing from the ME in long, long time. It is worth noting that the Ancient Greeks, and people like Alexander the Great were running all over the Middle East. There are Greek temples in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Israel/Palestine. Were these great things that you contribute to Middle Easterners really by Middle Easterners, or were they actually invented by the Greeks, Romans and Macedonians living in the Middle East?

Public key cryptography, invented by Diffie and Hellman in 1976.

Lasers miss by five years, having been invented in 1960, and light emitting diodes by three.

Shrink wrapping was developed at the end of th 1960's and so qualifies.

These are the truly innovative products I can see by glancing around my living room.

There is no proof or your argument that whites or East Asians account for science and technology is baseless. Read once Guns, Steel and Germs by Jarred Diamond. Why particular race or people of a particular nation were more inventive depends on a number of factors, not genetic at all. Genetically all races or people of every nation are equally gifted and if one race does better than the other is not because he is by birth or genetic contents better. it is because he is at an advantage geologically or environmentally or culturally or socially.

Wrong. Fleming was the first to isolate it, but the effect of penicillin mould has been known for thousands of years

Public key cryptography : Based on cryptography. "the use of codes and ciphers to protect secrets, began thousands of years ago"
Lasers : Concept by Einstein in 1917, led to holograms in 1948 to Masers in 1951
Shrink wrap: Give you that! Though I did write that "most inventions......"

This is pathetic, bereft of any honesty.

Your "white man" thing is cheap racism that you don't even try to support with the lists of Nobel Laureates, etc. Nor do you notice such differentiating issues as population, wealth, or political factors that could slow the communication and cooperation upon which scientific progress depends.

White men were able to develop the wealth, population and political factors whereas other societies did not.

You are, of course, welcome to quote lists of Nobel Laureates to support your position. But you know as well as I you will find scant support there.

The Indian sub-continent was even more thoroughly colonized and oppressed at roughly the same time. Yet they have contributed much to human knowledge. And in fact it was the colonization that enabled them to do so.

This is a purely racist direction.

Sorry. I'm not even slightly interested in that.
