A black Yale graduate student took a nap in her dorm's common room. So a white student called police

"A white person voices suspicions about an innocuous person of color. Police are summoned. And the encounter is posted on social media, sparking outrage about racial profiling.

The black student, Lolade Siyonbola, posted two videos of the encounter to Facebook, where they have been widely viewed and drawn thousands of comments.

"I deserve to be here. I pay tuition like everybody else," an annoyed Siyonbola told responding officers in one video after they asked for her ID. "I'm not going to justify my existence here."

According to Siyonbola, she was working on a paper in the Hall of Graduate Studies when she fell asleep in a common room. Another female student came in, turned on the lights and told her, "You're not supposed to be sleeping here. I'm going to call the police."

After two white police officers arrived and began questioning her in a stairwell, Siyonbola posted 17 minutes of their encounter to Facebook Live.

When Siyonbola asked them about the complaint, one officer said, "She called us (and) said there's somebody who appeared they weren't ... where they were supposed to be."
The 34-year-old grad student in African studies unlocked her dorm-room door in front of police to show that she lived there, but they still asked for her ID. "You're in a Yale building and we need to make sure that you belong here," the other officer told her.

After some hesitation, Siyonbola handed her ID over. "I really don't know if there's a justification for you actually being in the building," she told the officers, saying she needed to get back to working on her paper.

Eventually two more officers arrived (race of officers not mentioned because they weren't white). After some confusion about Siyonbola's ID -- her name did not match the name in a student database -- the police told her she was free to go.
Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart said the issue was that the name on Siyonbola's ID card was her preferred name, so it did not exactly match her name in university records.

Siyonbola also did not respond to a request for comment. But in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon she said, "Grateful for all the love, kind words and prayers, your support has been overwhelming. Black Yale community is beyond incredible and is taking good care of me. I know this incident is a drop in the bucket of trauma Black folk have endured since Day 1 America, and you all have stories. Share below if you feel led.
    "

    https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/09/us/yale-student-napping-black-trnd/index.html

I used CNN as the source for a few reasons. One because they're so melodramatic about the situation, two because they over-dramatize the racial component, and three because they're sure to tell you that two white cops show up and fail to mention the third who is black and does most of the talking. They also fail to mention that the black student hesitates to show her ID and makes the encounter 15 to 20 minutes, and they fail to show the speech the girl gave about how she almost died because the cops were called on her.

So basically, Sarah Braasch called the cops on Lolade Siyonbola for sleeping in a room that she thought was against campus policy to sleep in. Cops show up and make sure Lolade is a student there, and after they find this out, they tell Sarah that Lolade is fine to sleep in the area she was asleep in. But that ends the story and has no way to fuel the racist fire. Therefore, Sarah's name was replaced with "white student," Lolade's name was replaced with "black student," and Cops was replaced with "two white cops" because that helps motivate and drive narrow minded idiots to hold protests and call the "white student" racist.

This is the kind of stuff that's pushing left of center democrats to the middle or to the right of center because they have no desire to be associated with all this fabricated racism. This is also why a lot of democrats voted to make America great again.

I'm curious to see how far African studies gets her when she leaves the Yale bubble and enters the real world.

I didn't see this posted on the forum, surprisingly.

Well, it's odd to see somebody sleeping in the stairwell, white or black or whatever. It's probably odd to see somebody studying in the stairwell.

I think that I would have let it pass and have thought somebody is on drugs, leave them to their own devices, and not talked to the person.

Her ID had the wrong name on it of course they are going to confirm she is a student and authorized to be in the dorm.

I'm lucky that no one called the police on me after I passed out studying. And I fell asleep on a few occasions.

These stories ... it's like some glorified hall monitor who believes they should mind everyone's business and make their life difficult to enforce some unwritten rules. There have been way too many stories like this lately and these busy bodies should really mind their own effin business.

Narratives at play to keep racism alive and well, and the people divided.

There is no other reason for skin color to be mentioned.

Unless the person is black, then it's racist to ask them something. It's racist to call the cops on a black person as well. That girl is supposedly related to Bob Marley so she'll get double special treatment, she's also playing to the racial crowds by saying she almost died.

Funny she was asleep and then told the cops she needed to get back to doing her paper at 2 am.

Nobody likes a busy body, I can't stand them. This isn't the first time Sarah called the cops on someone. I've always hated hall monitors and will always hate them. When I was in college, my truck was in the body shop after some minor damage and I was driving my mom's car. I was walking out to her car and saw one of the college hall monitors going around writing tickets on every car that didn't have a campus sticker. When I got to my mom's car, she was behind it starting to write me a ticket so I slapped the clip board out of her hand and kicked it about 20 yards across the parking lot, got in the car, and left.

She was white, too, how dare she write ME a ticket, I'm not black. ;)

It goes to show you the petty things people call the police for and it has nothing to do with racism. People just don't communicate with other people and would rather have the police or government take care of their problems.

That's exactly right. I doubt the white libs at Yale will even care that she shrugged their support and only thanked black Yale though, that's how they roll.

Well said. Sarah was a busy body who should have gone to bed and Lolade was an attention seeker who found the perfect opportunity for her 15 minutes of fame and racism.

No lol, it was in 1998 when people couldn't run to social media for fabricated cries of whatever today's new anti-Republican word is. She just said "HEY you can't do that!" Yeah, well, I did.

We also weren't political back then, it was something we were too cool for and left up to our parents. If a student was into politics, they were straight up nerd herd to the max, like David Hogg minus the gleaming rainbow of attention he's dragging behind.

The student was not sleeping in a stairwell. She was sleeping in a common area of the dorm, where it would not be suspicious to find someone studying or falling asleep after studying.

Lolade was someone who stood up for herself, in the face of harassment by a fellow student.

I'd be mad as hell too if someone called the cops on me because they assumed one thing when I'm just a student, made worse when the white student has apparently done this before.

FWIW I hope no one's blaming the cops in this.

I only heard one report on it. They said stairwell. idk, if in a common area with furniture and amenities, this is crazy to call the police.

I have a much simpler take on things like this anymore. As about 75% of racism accusations are wholly false, I refuse to wade through them to find the 1 in 4 that have an element of truth. So I've relegated racism to the I don't care column of my life. All I can do is control how I treat others that are different from me. I cannot control what anyone else does so I'm not going to concern myself with it.

Now we will need to add sleeping while black to driving while black.

One wonder what the excused for calling the police happen to be on a peacefully sleeping fellow student.

One also need to wonder how dangerous she must had look with her black skin and in her sleep that there was a needed to call the police to check her out.

Well you do have to be careful who you communicate with. I remember a blond who almost got me killed by telling the bartender to throw the damn TV on the floor, nobody cared about the world series anyway. I shuffled quickly to the door and was very sorry for buying her drinks.

These days you don't know what might set a person off.

Another one of these goofy stories that wouldn't be news had any of those involved been a different color. Also, I'll point out that the Russians have been attempting to stir up this race war nonsense. They were running regular social media ads about crap like this, trying to get blacks to riot. Considering how bad BLM got, I'd say they had some success.

America doesn't need Russia's help to stir up racial conflicts. Russia can't be blamed for America's own history.

This also illustrates the slippery slope of "see something say something", amplified by recent school shootings and the subsequent hysteria. She was sleeping in a "common room" (not in a dorm room) and at 34 years old she's not really typical-college-student-aged, so both of those facts could lead someone to be wary that she wasn't a student and didn't live there. It's only "newsworthy" because of the skin colors involved.

Well yes you do if are in violation of a dorm rule and because you were not responsible enough to have your correct name on your ID it causes you about 5 minutes of your time.

Strange as in my life I had fallen asleep in public libraries where you are not supposed to sleep a few times but I was always awoken by a polite librarian not armed officers of the law.

The caller should at least need to paid for the wasted police manpower that resulted from her call.
