Does anyone make a real program that will actually stop pop ups, 99% of them, and not just the odd one. (pop up blocker is more an invitation than a protection) I am so tired of going to a site and having to fight my way through a half dozen windows of crap before I get to the page I asked for.

On the same topic, does anyone know of software that will prevent videos on a page from starting all by themselves when the page is opened. I am really interested in stopping the advertising I did not ask for???

What web browser do yo use? If it's Internet Explorer, run away and never look back. Most other browsers, like Firefox and Chrome do a pretty good job of blocking popups on their own. I mostly use Firefox, and I almost never see popups. In addition, there are a few plugins that you can install to help. Adblock Plus will totally block most adds (actually prevents them from being downloaded, instead of just hiding them), NoScript allows you to block any/all/select executable content (java, javascript, etc), and Flashblock can hide all Flash content, instead showing a placeholder that you can choose to click on to see that item.

I am not as familiar with Chrome, but I am pretty sure it has comparable plugins of its own to do similar jobs.

    Download Firefox
    Download Chrome

You shouldn't be stuck with IE.....Download Firefox. I have both but use Firefox moslty. Some of my clients' web sites work better with IE which is the only time I use it.

But since you have IE go 'Tools' and then 'Manage Add-Ons'...See if you have any weird tool bars or other bad stuff. You can get rid of them there. Sometimes those tool bars cause pop ups as well.

    Firefox has a similar feature.

I recommends you to use Firefox and Chrome as both of them are having built in features for pop ups blocks.

    Another happy NoScript user here.

Dynamic content and client-side scripting has changed the game radically. These days the wise consumer must play an active role in choosing what to allow into their computer. Nobody in their right mind would allow anonymous strangers to come into their homes and riffle through their personal belongings. It only makes sense to apply the same rules to your computer!

Yeah, NoScript is one of the add-ons I always use on Firefox today, and Firefox is pretty much all I use for my internet needs. Another add-on I like for it is Request Policy, which goes beyond even NoScript's ability to protect your privacy from Big Data tracking companies like Google by automatically blocking and allowing you to define what outside servers a site you visit may contact. There are quite a few rather uniquitous tracking companies out there that have tendrils in just about every website you visit, with Google Analytics probably being #1 at it.

I use NoScript, BetterPrivacy and DoNotTrackMe. (I don't know why all of the product names have no spaces, but that's really how they're written.) Whenever NoScript alerts me to an unknown off-site link, I check the 2LD out to see what they do, and either allow or block based on that info. CDNs are wanted, but anything having to do with advertising or monitoring my web usage gets blocked.
