Well you can't read the Bible at a graduation ceremony either, so there you go!

Yea well this doesn't seem to be up there with your usual great posting, sorry but really don't even see much of a story here either way it goes. If it was my kid I would support them also and be happy to defend them against the tyranny of some radical libturd unioun/sucking obama loving subhuman piece of shhiitt (probably a closet Islam Radical). Hell with them its time for a REVOLT! LOL Yea well I don't care either way about this, maybe if the principle just came out an ask politely without "Threats" would of been a more logical way of handling it.

The fact that they would act this petty towards their valedictorian says more about the school than the student.

Nah, a derailment would be something like this: "So this valedictorian is complaining about having to apologize? What about Joe Biden, why hasn't he apologized for existing?" Specifically, it would be a sub-type of derailment called a deflection, but there you go. What my post was however was something utilizing what is commonly known as a joke. Granted, conservatives would likely find it a bit funnier than liberals, but I'm thinking even they would have a sense of humor about it and not be offended. Can you imagine the kind of person who would be?

    Well, maybe we can!

I think the principal is being a sanctimonious jerk. He's lucky they didn't go postal on his behind.

The kid is not doing herself any favors since this incident will follow her forever. Chances are it will cost her job opportunities as it shows her to be rebellious against authority.

if she said something like the F-word and other harsher language i could see them principle demanding an apology, but she said something thats not even really a bad word at all. i seriously will never understand how the word "hell" is swearing.

either way the principle shouldnt hold her diploma over this, its in no way legal by any means and sounds like the fruit cake just wanted to get his name in the news. if that were my daughter i would probably go to jail because i would forcefully get her (*)(*)(*)(*)ed diploma she worked so hard for, id be (*)(*)(*)(*)ed as a father that one little word will hold back 4 years of hard work and dedication.

my foot would be so far up his ass he would be screaming profanities for the next year.

like i said i can pretty much understand him wanting the girl to give an apology , but he needs to hand over the diploma whether she apologizes or not.

So many questions, so few answers.

Is part of the graduation requirements is no swearing at the graduation ceremonies? If not...
Is it school policy that if a student swears during a speech and refuses to apologize that the punishment is the withholding of the diploma? If not...
Was the student told that if she strayed from the text of the speech or she swore during the speech, she would have have her diploma withheld?

In none of these are true, then I don't see where the school has the right to do what they did.

As for texmaster's belief that she should be accountable for her mistakes, maybe she doesn't feel she made a mistake and as for personal responsibility, maybe if people took personal responsibility and stood up against stupid rules/laws, history would have had less atrocities committed by average people doing what they were told to do.

Well, she's learning PR as a result.

I couldn't find any thing that says that it's legal for the principal to keep her diploma. There was another incident where a kid had a similar problem because his relatives cheered for him when he walked across the stage.

Sooner or later someone is going to get killed over stuff like this.

She should my hole! Hell = imaginary place, for which there is no evidence. Preachers and priests mention it all the tinme when they're trying (and succeeding) to scare silly christians into doing what they want.

There is no way on earth or in hell that she owes an apology!

Prissy christians need to get a grip of themselves. You are not owed anything!

Ain't that the truth! Christians are so easily offended. They don't mind when their local priest or pastor uses the word, ho no, just when someone else does.

Freedom of speech seems not to apply, when prissy christians get het up.

That's why I said "possibly", in line with the quotes attributed to the family.

I thought I already did. While an apology would have been a good thing, withholding her diploma pending a written apology for this is a gross over-reaction and effectively blackmail which even if it works, renders the apology meaningless. It is the families opinion that the principal is abusing his power so it's perfectly legitimate to stand up to that.

What she said isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, but, I'm not sure how other school systems work, but, the school I graduated from was definitely able to withhold a student's diploma due to any sort of misbehavior at graduation, and, they made that known prior to the ceremony...

That said, an apology letter isn't that hard...

She made a mistake, she should just suck it up, and, write the letter...

Then, she can be done with it, and have her diploma...

    Not a huge deal...

Back in high school, the school declined to give 12 students (A average students that never got into any trouble) their diplomas due to them having Confederate flags on their cars/trucks. There was nothing listed within the school's guidelines that prohibited flags from being displayed on vehicles. The school eventually apologized for their actions and released the diplomas after the families threatened legal action.

I don't even see why she needs her diploma, frankly.

If she's the valedictorian, assuredly she's already enrolled in college somewhere. If she's enrolled in college, no one is ever going to care about her high school diploma. Potential employers will just want to look at her college experience.

The principal is being monumentally stupid for what was obviously just an excited utterance.

    Agreed.
Who exactly is she supposed to be apologizing to, anyway?

Who does she address this note to? Her classmates that have graduated and gone? The state? The county? The world? God?

Is she supposed to mail a copy to everyone who was in attendance?..or is the principal power tripping?
