A Valedictorian crybaby refuses to write an apology after she swore on stage.

To the school and to her classmates for violating the rules on profanity.

Please explain why knowing she screwed up she deserves a pass on writing a simple apology?

This is no example of someone lacking personal responsibility. If anything, the principal is the one lacking personal responsibility by withholding the valedictorian from her hard earned diploma.

I apologize for using a Saxon word for expressing my frustration and rage at not being properly educated in this nice Communist School system.

Well, this kid submitted the speech to the school beforehand, and that was accepted. From the principals viewpoint, the kid strayed off speech AND now has to worry about some whackadoo parent complaining to him about it. He basically wants the kid to own up to not staying on script and be able to say with a straight face to some parent complaining about it that the kid owned up to it and that's that.

Now yeah, he's being a bit ham-fisted here, I'll grant you that. I think if he's used a softer touch, he would have gotten that apology.

I am aware of Tex's ideology here, and I agree that he blatantly uses petty instances to further his beliefs.

 

If that is the best the principal can do. Did any of you graduate with a 4.0, I know I sure as hell didn't.. She made a stupid mistake I bet the principal make plenty including not have very good judgement. They is a time to take a stand and a time to ingnore it. This needed to be ignored.

 

This is the first time in his sad life anybody ever paid any attention to him. He's not going to give up this brush with "celebrity".
He'll hire an agent, go on some stupid talk show, act all indignant, create a bunch of controversy, write a book....

 

It's not even a stupid mistake. What she said means the exact same thing as saying heck. It's not even really a mistake.

 

She was being liberal with the use of a Saxon word, and the Principal was trying to conserve the 1000 year old war against rude and crude Saxon words.

You see, in 1066 A.D. the Normans conquered Angland, and the Normans forbade the speaking of Saxon.


Most of our cuss words are from the Saxon/German plain talk of that time.

So the struggle for Saxon plain talk goes on.

"Hell" is a very confusing one, in particular. I mean, my pastor says there are commandments about not cursing or swearing, yet she says "hell" frequently. In church, even. Is it even a profane word?

Exactly. I got my diploma in 1995. Since then, I've graduated college and law school, passed the NY bar, had dozens of jobs, and currently have a career. I've bought a house, cars, had security clearances in federal court, served in political office, gotten married, and had two kids.

And my diploma is still sitting, never having moved, in its cushioned folder in my parents' attic.

 

When I read this I see, "All she has to do is forfeit her 1st amendment rights to a power-tripping authoritarian taking her gaffe way too personally; then move on with her life."

Perhaps he had a rough year trying to manage all those students, or maybe the Superintendent has been riding his ass for something. I get the feeling he's frustrated about something, and needs to throw some weight around to gain back his confidence in his own authority.

 

He's a powerless worm, caught between the administration on one side and the teachers' union, parents, and students on the other. Finally given a tiny bit of (assumed) power, he wields it like an 8-year-old with a BB gun on Christmas, pointing it at anyone whom he thinks will react.
