An apology to all members of the military and police!

I just want to say that I am truly sorry for all those years that I was close to believing in near total pacifism! Rabbi Jesus/Yehoshua once asked a question of the Scribes and Pharisees that should have made it obvious to me that an extreme situation can call for drastic action by a Christian or Jew who feels called into a life in the military or police!

Mark 3:4

I am almost certain that Rabbi Jesus/Yehoshua was referring to the situation faced by the Machabees when Greco - Syrian armies were attacking Jewish communities on the Sabbath.

One community had refused to fight back....but the Machabees....in my opinion correctly judged that this is a violation of an admonition by King Solomon:

Ecclesiastes 7:16

Well, when you join the military or the police I am sure everyone will accept your apology as genuine.

 

There's really no need to get so esoteric about it. Jesus clearly didn't preach unconditional pacifism. Just look at Luke 22:36

 

When I was 14 I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

My girlfriend talked me into being anointed with olive oil and prayed for and
I was healed six or seven years later.

I wasn't able to put those scriptures together until I was over thirty years old.....
and by then it would have been nearly impossible to train me to be a competent
police officer or soldier.

But at least I wanted to break away from the rather dogmatic pacifism that I was taught
in my twenties.

 

True...... but it wasn't until I was in my thirties and read the Book of Machabees in the Catholic Bible that
finally...... I clued to this truth that I now feel I should have noticed years earlies.

 

Forgive my ignorance and my curiosity, but don't 'true Christians' recognize a difference between murder and justified killing?

 

Most do....... but sometimes we struggle with questions like this for years or decades before we come to a clarity on such questions.

 

If you are a Christian and want Jesus to return why would you fight to save your life? He said that you shouldn't resist the evil man. Besides, God is supposed to protect you and if you get killed it was God's will. On top of that a magic number of Christians have to be killed before Jesus returns. Your death might be the magic number and you can't get to heaven unless you're dead. Therefore, if you want Jesus to return and if you want to get to heaven you should hope that someone kills you because of your faith.When you resist it shows that you don't trust God because he's never supposed to give believers anything they can't handle.

Be like the early Christians. Face the hungry lions with a joyful song on your lips. They were eager to see Jesus.

 

Jesus was no pacifist.

34Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn ‘A man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’…

 

He is supposed to have said, But I say to you, That you resist not evil: but whoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matt 5:39)

 

You need to take that whole section of the bible in context and not cherry pick versus.

This is exactly the type of reasoning process that can take us
years to think our way through.

You are correct........ there is a time and a place to not bother trying to
literally preserve our own lives through resistance..........

On the other hand..... there is a time and a place to sign up for training so that
we can effectively defend somebody who is unable to defend themselves......

There are some people.... who may even have so much spiritual power that they can
pray in a certain way..... and a potential assailant may fall to the ground and go through
some sort of "deliverance" where fallen angels or evil aliens or former humans (who have gone
poltergeist).... may leave them....... and they totally change their mind about doing harm?!?!

My wife has taken me to meetings where the majority of the people fell to the floor..... but I never did.....

I suppose some of the people there might think that I was possessed or something......

but I would like to think that Messiah Yeshua - Jesus and I have a pretty close friendship......

and he takes me by the right hand.... and stabilizes me.... kind of like.....

The most important meaning for the word "sword" seems to me to be
the word of G-d.....

that comes in many forms.....

one of which was written down for us 2000 or more years ago.....

but also people around us have stories for us about what happened in their own lives....

that can inspire us to radically change our wrong thought and behaviour patterns.

Turning the other cheek is what Jesus is supposed to have preached.

My favorite verse. In fact I use it as a username on some other forums.

 

A slap on the cheek is an insult, not an assault. He didn't say to give your other daughter or limb. As for resist not evil, what specifically is he talking about? Is he saying that you shouldn't resist satan? In context it's talking non life threatening things.

 

Nor is he claiming it to be.

that we use..... as best as we can to have some idea of how to live... and deal with the
specific situations that we face...........

I think you may be reading into the passage too much. In verse 35 it says "And he said into them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, nothing." Why would Jesus asked them if they lacked any physical needs and then all of a sudden switch gears and tell to to get spiritual things without any explanation of what he meant? Wouldn't that be considered bait and switch?

He and I butt heads on creation but he does have some bright spots. Though I'm not all that convinced of a multiverse. We haven't even seen the end of our own.

 

You are mistaken. Jesus is supposed to have said, You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. Matt 5:43-44

 

If I kill someone in self defense does that mean I hated him? No. I can love my enemy and yet still defend myself and my loved ones. In fact it's out of love that I'm stopping him now from continuing his attacks. It's like punishing a child.

And it is astonishing how people who should be able to cooperate with each other... who are so close in their beliefs on so many
questions...... can become enemies over rather small disputes.

Some people might be willing to be violent toward....... or even kill a family member or friend
who supports a political leader that they don't personally like.

Ezekiel chapter 37 could happen again and again and again and again as
the G-d of Abraham takes us closer and closer to Eventual Universal Salvation.
