An Excellent Opinion on the Decline of America.

Probably the same as Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill who supplied arms and aid to Josef Stalin during the Second World War.

 

Both wars combined amount to a fraction of the cost of the USA's enormous personal entitlement programs.

 

Gonna respond to O'Reilly's article.

"If you study history, you know that America was built on self-reliance and personal achievement. In the early years of the Republic, the federal and state governments pretty much stayed out of the way as folks built businesses and communities. There were absolutely no public safety nets. If you failed, it was up to you to survive."


This is partially true. Back in the good ole days, there was no social safety net. People would just starve and die, or rely on charity. If you didn't have the money for a doctor, you once again relied on charity or died. And many people did die during this time. I had a personal finance professor (who bashed unions all the time, so hardly a liberal) tell me that before Medicare was passed in 1960, old age would crush some people. And the bill that passed Medicare also required hospitals to at least stabilize people instead of turning them away. He said it wasn't uncommon to see people DYING outside of a hospital because they had no money to pay.

America, aside from being built on self-reliance and personal achievement, was also built on the backs of slaves. It sure as hell does not hurt when you have ultra cheap labor to do your bidding. And it it still sustained by the low-skilled workers who do all the drudge work. And I don't know where he gets that self-reliance and personal achievement do not exist today. There are many medical advances and technological ones all the time!

This part really is laughable. I see no connection between this and America's decline. Drugs have been around forever, and so has free love and suspicion of authority. In fact suspicion of authority especially is a really good thing to have in many circumstances. I guess if an authority figure tells me to do something, I better do it without question!

As the family structure collapsed, entitlements became more common, as children and single mothers had to be supported. Liberal Americans looked to the Western European model of cradle-to-grave support as a panacea for "income inequality." The view that Washington has a moral obligation to provide a decent lifestyle for everyone took root."


Yeah like those single moms who work minimum wage jobs to support their kids decline to compete right? Or the older people who are in poor health? The family structure collapsing is NOT the reason people live in poverty, though it plays a role. MANY MANY people lived in poverty during the Great Depression and family structure was as tight as ever then.

Washington providing a decent lifestyle? Yes! Up to a point. And everyone agrees to this. We need police to keep criminals at bay. We need firefighters to combat potentially huge disasters. We need courts to enforce contracts and laws. And we need a social safety net for people capitalism hangs out to dry, and government regulations to keep businesses from taking advantage of cheap labor, like what happened when child labor was still legal (but let's not talk about that part of our history!)

So in conclusion, O'Reilly is mythologizing American history. Let's also not forget the government can do some good, such as I don't know employing a military? And also there is that whole moon-landing then when the government and the private sector teamed up .

 

Irrefutable.
