Obviously, as is already being heavily reported, the story of the night is how DeSantis has (essentially) been handed the 2024 GOP Pres. Nomination.
Obviously, Ron has to wait until after the Midterms to make his move.
But, come next year, he just needs to announce that he is running (regardless of what Trump decides) and then distance himself from Trump (citing Trump having no chance to win in 2024 because of the evidence presented by the 1/6 Panel).
Personally, I would love to see the GOP Nominate Trump.
Trump would be the easiest GOP Nominee to defeat (and a Certain Loser).
DeSantis would be a much harder candidate to defeat in November.

That is part of the equation I never understood. It is not like there is a realistic chance that Trump will go to jail yet democrats constantly attack the only candidate they have a chance a beating. The attacks will at best serve to discredit Trump which is exactly what most of the GOP leadership wants. This will give the opportunity for a younger, smarter GOP candidate to emerge. At worse the attacks will fail and galvanize Trump's support in some form of partisan tribalism.

    Definitely a Catch-22 for Democrats.
Discredit Trump and facilitate a DeSantis Nomination (who would be much harder to defeat in 2024).
    Definitely a dilemma.

I like DeSantis, though I have some disagreements with him.

He would be an excellent candidate, though I'd feel sorry for Floridians who'd lose him as Governor!

As for Trump, he was a good President but he deliberately bungled Georgia's Senate race and handed unitary control of government to the opposition. That's disqualifying in my view.

Time for someone new with similar policy who isn't so brash.

Okay firstly this is not about having a candidate they can defeat as much as it is about justice. There is a great hunger on the left to see justice carried out. In a way Mitch was right - if Trump had been convicted by the Senate the investigation may not have happened or at least would not have been as large as it was. Mind you if he had been convicted jan 6 may never have happened

The republicans should forget about “chasing the base”. What they really need to do is shift back to the centre and pick up all those centrists and independents. Actually have a platform. Run on being the ethical party. Do you know who would do well in that slot? Liz Cheney. She is showing herself to be thoughtful, articulate but above all principled and these hearings are going to underscore the need for principles and integrity

That was my point. I don't think there will every be any justice. Trump will not go to jail. He has been impeached twice already. Do you think there will be any justice beyond that?

I watched part of the hearing. I saw Liz Cheney quote a tweet from Trump saying he praised what was going on. The part of the tweet she DIDN'T quote though was him telling the rioters to peacefully go home.

It is quite obvious from that alone that this committee is going to be very one sided and only tell half the story.

The only reason that they are having the public hearings now, which are supposed to last for "weeks" is to try and affect the elections. It's a last ditch gamble to keep control of either the House, Senate, or both. They know they can't run on anything positive that they've done because they haven't DONE anything that has actually benefited this Country.

The nightmare is that Trump and Biden/Harris would be the "choices".

It most certainly is tremendous free publicity for the duopoly. Everyone sees only the two sides droning on for weeks, thus obscuring alternative views and thinking.

Doesn’t matter who the nominees are for either party…unless things improve drastically with inflation, Repubs will win the WH in 2024

Both dems and some repubs must keep up the hate towards Trump because they fear if elected again he will de-rails their gravy train. They can see how popular Trump is with the people. Trump is the most politically attacked man in the history of the USA. He is feared because he has no fear of calling out the phony politicians and their phony policies -- both foreign and domestic.

Yes Desantis would be harder (would win the popular vote without a doubt), but there is going to be a massive anti-Biden/Dems vote in the 2024 election. We are heading to a recession, the stock market is on the verge of crashing, gas is heading to $8+, the border is a mess, etc etc etc

In a perfect world - neither Trump or Biden would be the nominee. However if that is what we get, millions will hold their nose and vote against Biden. You only need 120K to switch enough swing states in 2020 for Trump to have won

Don't worry about us. We have seen enough of culture war politics to last a lifetime. We need someone to focus on real issues. Of course the problem is that if he did become president, then the whole country would be focused on his culture wars. Some might argue that it would be a good thing when government is focused on populism, because then they won't interfere with bigger issues.

Not sure what this has to do with the topic, but she did quote that and added how late into the riot that tweet came.

We finally agree. Trump is toxic. Even Kamala Harris could beat him. Better hope you folks are able to prevent Trump's nomination. You won't beat anybody else. I've already seen DeSantis ads running on TV so it is inevitable.

Trump won’t be the 2024 Republican candidate for potus. Way to many self inflicted wounds. Besides, the better strategy is Desantis.

Oh god. It's hideous. The ONE time I thought he actually looked human was when he spoke from Walter Reed. He didn't have that orange gunk on his face and his hair wasn't his usual "style". ;-(

DeSantis is Trump-lite, but still a better choice than Trump himself.

Disagree with the 1st part, agree with the 2nd.

I voted libertarian in 2016. Held my nose & voted for Donnie D***hebag in 2020 - the most reprehensible, steaming pile of dog**** to pollute the White House since Slick Willie. If I spoke about their wives the same way DD has trashed so many of the women who've crossed his path, Trumpsters would feed me my front teeth. And I'd have it coming. But how dare you criticize Dear Leader for wiping his a$$ with the same standards of conduct everyone else abides by!

With the exception of the judiciary - for which I'm happy to give him credit - there isn't anything DD did that wasn't nuked by Dementia Joe in his 1st week. DD never had the balls or the discipline to get policies implemented legislatively - which would have set them in stone - when he had both houses of Congress. Instead it was executive orders: all of them eradicated by rapid strokes of the same pen once they woke DJ up from his nap.

DD has a gift for tapping into populist discontent, but he can't avoid stepping on his own d***. Because he's a reprehensible, steaming pile of dog****. Desantis has shown the ability to mobilize that discontent in to real & substantive policy legislation - without the narcissistic, childish bullyboy bs - while in a reliably purple state he just barely won against a guy who was busted (literally) snorting cocaine off a gay hooker's a$$. DD needs to get back to what he does best: cheating on his wives & bragging about it to his drooling sycophants; leaving the real, hard work to the grownups. He can't hold Desantis' jockstrap.

What color is the sky on your world? Have you seen her polling numbers or watched her public appearances? The most ridiculous & inept veep of my lifetime, and I'm old enough to remember Dan Quayle.

I understand how bad she is. I expect bad candidates in U.S. elections. My point is that Trump is toxic and can't win another election in my opinion. But you are free to vote for him. After DeSantis I would say Trump would be best for the country but I think he can't win.

How about this for poetic justice? Trump surrounds himself with sycophants (again) who tell him he can win the nomination. When he loses he claims there was fraud and runs as a third party candidate, giving the presidency to whoever runs on the Dem side.

In a Trump - DeSantis primary duel, Dirty Donnie would fight tooth and nail. DeSantis would respond. It would be a mud slinging contest of epic proportions.

Whoever won would be up against a Democrat who wouldn't have to do ANY opposition research.
