1. why wouldn't a true atheist care what others believe? 2. can you identify more accurately the percentage of atheists who make their goal to convince people how wrong Christians are. Is there some sort of study you can link us to?
Private citizens can do what they want in this regard. If they want to promote their values in the political realm, they have every right to do so. The Constitution can limit the enactment of laws which express those values. So, for example, if an individual believes sex outside of marriage should be forbidden, their political effort to have that belief/value forced upon everyone else through law would fail. That being said, groups of Christians, generally members of a church who attempt to enter politics can do so too, but they must surrender their tax exempt status to do so. I've never seen a church voluntarily elect to surrender previously granted tax exempt status. Many churches cheat the system, and the IRS is lax in enforcement (Obama's fault, of course). The First Amendment, made applicable to the States via the Fourteenth Amendment, cannot promote any religion. That includes government officials. Thus, Kim Davis, a state government official, was not allowed to impose her personal religious beliefs upon the citizens of Kentucky by refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. That's one reason. There are others.
Why would somebody be afraid of something they think does not exist? DUH!! It's the religious nuts who are afraid that there is a giant vengeful invisible boogie-man floating around in the sky somewhere ready to strike them down if they screw up. This thread should be "are xtians afraid of God?" but the answer is so obviously "YES" that would be no need to even ask the question.
You were the one who claimed Christians are imposing their beliefs on others so exactly how are they doing that?
Now, or in the past? BTW, may actual statement was: "Many [of the reasons non-theists criticize theists and the religious dogma they promote] have to do with theist attempts to impose their beliefs upon others." Your recall of it is a bit off.
The bible instructs atheists exactly how they should act, and what concerns they should have. Eat drink and be merry. For tomorrow we die. The cold fact is, those that act in a goodish fashion, due to fear of torture and isolation for eternity, are considered less moral than atheists, that still against all predictions of all being ax murderers, have compassion and empathy. Two characteristics that are in rare supply on the right. Likely why the pope says, you can be saved if you are decent, but are not a dogmatic adherent.
You made these assertions in this thread. Please respond to my questions about them. Again, you claim that 'true' atheists wouldn't care what others believe. That seems an assertion worth some examination. Why would they prove more indifferent than less 'true' atheists? You claim that 'most' atheists make it their goal to convince people how wrong Christians are. Did you forget to include a qualifying phrase in your sentence, or do you think atheist behavior on an internet debate forum mirrors atheist behavior elsewhere?
How are they doing it now? It seems very hard for you to back up your statement for some reason. - - - Updated - - - So Christians should not be allowed to vote for people they want in office?
Religious fanatics right now are committing genocide. But yes, an atheist should ignore it as they are beheaded.
An atheist by definition does not believe or care about God. Most so called atheists have an actual hate towards the concept of a God and spend time trying to disprove it. - - - Updated - - - Christians are beheading people?
Why would I fear a thing I don't believe exists? What a ridiculous question. The followers of such an imaginary being do exist, and if they step on my toes, I'll push them off.
Do you worry about the actions of radical Muslims? Do you believe in their God? It ain't rocket science.
I am not the one claiming religion imposes it's belief on me but a bunch of you are and not a single one of you can tell me how. This validates my point that most so called atheists are filled with hate and not true atheists.
Thousands of years of history are not easily forgotten. What has been the policy of various churches that control government functions? To violently suppress opposing views. Is there as much of that policy as there once was in this country? No. But it has taken years of court battles to achieve that. When one reads about the Taliban walking into a girls school and killing the teachers and scattering the children - that is religion imposing it's beliefs on others. When one hears about Republican Congressmen wishing to jail all gay people or place them in concentration camps because they exist "against the will of God ..." then one can say that there is a threat contained only by rule of law that prohibits such action - and given the stance of church goers in other countries where gay people are murdered - then one knows that without the protections of the law, then the church cannot be relied on to prevent such atrocities.
So you have to talk about history or groups like the taliban to prove your point? Then you suggest congress is proposing laws to jail gays or stick them in concentration camps with no links of course. Fricken hilarious. Just admit that nobody is imposing their views on you. If you think Christians are imposing views you must really have a problem with gays and TG people since they are the ones getting legislation passed, not Christians.
I am an atheist and I bother with the religion forum, so that's wrong. As for motivations, that sounds like projection right there. If you're so secure in your faith, why are you coming to a religion forum, if not to convince atheists they're wrong? If you can think of another reason, that might apply to us too. Why would anyone consider what Christopher Hitchens believes to be of importance? Everyone is born an atheist then most, before they're old enough to understand much of anything, they're indoctrinated into believing that god exists. Many thereafter, when they become old enough and can actually think for themselves, learn that god was an invention of mankind and return to being an atheist.
According to your logic, the Christians who go on forums and debate atheists must be scared that atheists are right.
I have no interest in what you believe. I come here to have religious discussions with others, not to hear people do nothing but whine about how God isn't real. There are many forums I never visit here because they simply don't interest me. I don't go on the abortion forum only to say abortion is wrong and then leave. - - - Updated - - - I have yet to see an atheist put up a logical debate topic and respectfully argue it. They just troll and talk about fairy tales and unicorns.
