Why are atheists so obsessed with a god or gods that they don't even believe exist. Atheists say it's silly for adults to have an 'imaginary friend' - but isn't it just as silly to have an 'imaginary enemy'? Just thought I'd put that out there.

Atheists spend a lot of time talking about how 'bad' they think the Bible or the God of the Bible is - I think it's pretty silly that they spend so much time obsessing over a fictional character's morals.

    you're a funny little fruitnut, ain't ya :)

we're concerned about you, having said that, not with your sky beings. is that too weird for ya? the idea that an atheist cares about your welfare and mental health? okay, it's true, it's not YOU personally (god knows, we don't want you to stop the floorshow), it's anyone we know and love who is stumbling under the yoke of superstition. by extrapolation, and on a very good day, that might extend to our general community. maybe even the world. how about that !

    - - - Updated - - -

well I don't do that. it's all bumph and utterly irrelevant. what IS relevant is the fact that there are actual grown up humans out there who refer (and defer) to this balderdash in a serious fashion.

they are actually spending time obsessing over how some people want the rest of society to live according to the ideals of this fictional character that has been described by a bunch of tall tale spinners 2000 years ago.

It is hard to be upset with something that is a a wholly manufactured concept.

Gods simply do not exist. Roman, Norse, Abrahamic, or any other myth is not based on reality.

Personally, if folks want to murmur to magic sky fairies, I could not possibly give less of a (*)(*)(*)(*). Give your money to a religious pyramid scheme, hope for miracles, whatever, it affects me not.

But when cultists are attempting to ram their indoctrination into law, then I care.

Y0our gods are not my enemy, because they simply are not real. Trying to legislate your cult onto me is my enemy.

Obviously, atheists can't be obsessed with what doesn't exist. Some of them are concerned with what DOES exist - the delusion inside the minds of the brainwashed that makes them behave in undesirable ways. Atheists are concerned with those behaviors.

Look at all of the dangerous and wacko things people have done because they're sure it's the "will of god". Which is a figment of their imagination which justifies self-serving acts of all sorts. Trillions of prayers, and never once has this figment told the supplicant that his opinion was stupid, or given him any information he didn't already have. You'd think sooner or later a Believer would notice this pattern and wonder about it. That fact that most do not is another of those behaviors atheists are concerned about.

They don't really. You base your opinion of all atheists from the actions of a small minority of organizations and individuals. There are tens of millions of atheists in this country. Most of them live their
    Iives never thinking about god.

You seem more obsessed with atheists than most atheists are about god.

Then you do believe in god. That is spectacular. You could not rely on or even suggest what 'god knows' if you did not know god, especially if you don't believe in god.

Of course God is not the enemy. The enemy is those who wish to ram made up religious doctrine down the throats of others by making laws based on cult beliefs.

Well, first there's no evidence that it's not.....more evidence that it's made up is that the people who made it up couldn't agree with each other because they were pulling it out of their collective...es.

when we take the the big bang and apply the same statement, "theres no evidence that its not made up", what do we come to?

If lack of unanimity is equated to invalidity, then whats to be made of the theory of evolution?

There are few posts that make me laugh harder than yours. Do you hear a constant whooshing sound...in the area of just over your head?

Atheists that "obsess" over God are actually “obsessing” over those who truly believe there is a God, not God him/herself.

It's actually not that hard to understand in fact it's not hard to understand at all which means you had to go out of your way once again to misunderstand something.

Here lets try and make it obvious.

The pope tells an aids ridden country not to use condoms, tells them that condoms could even make it worse.

Atheists don't get upset at God, they get upset at the guy who said it specifically BECAUSE he believes in God.

The imaginary God isn't the problem, the belief in him is.

Why do we get stuck talking directly about God? Because theists say "God says" so we ask why would God say that, they say "without God we wouldn't or would" so we show that "with God we did or don’t" If you would keep God to yourself and stop talking about abortion and stem cells and gay marriage and rape, etc, we could all forget all about God but you can’t and so neither can we.

Religion has always been the greatest danger to humanity and just because secularism and science has tamed Christianity doesn’t mean we should turn our back on it.

    True.
In exactly the same way that unicorns are not my prey when I go hunting. That would presume the existence of unicorns.
You can not make an enemy of that which you do not believe exists.

Obviously the use of ironic sarcasm has gone over your head. My guess is intentionally to obfuscate.

Or you believe the poster "knows" God and is correct in characterizing most believers as being no more than floor show entertainers.

    Decisions, decisions.

Take abortion for example: There are numerous passages in the Bible where God either commands or condones abortion. There are also passages where the prophets pray for abortion.

There is nothing in the Bible that directly prohibits abortion or even alludes to abortion being bad.

Yet ... we have all these churches and religious organizations lobbying against abortion on the basis of "God said so".

The examples of man made doctrine that are not supported by the Bible are numerous.

Take sex/premarital sex for example. The Church was against sex for anything but procreation (may still be). They even edited numerous passages in the Bible to support their zeal against sex.

    Proverbs 6:26 is one example

This is from the vulgate, one of the oldest Bibles extant.
Below is a longer version of the passage to give some context. This time from the Good News Translation (used by the Lutheran Church - original Church of Protestantism)

The message is clear. Adultery makes no sense. Why would you risk your very life over another mans wife when for the price of a loaf of bread you can hire a prostitute.

Does this mean that prostitution is condoned ? Pretty much It is not condoned directly but it is certainly suggested as a far better option than adultery.

We must also consider the time when this passage was written. It was common for men to have multiple wives and/or concubines. Heck almost all the patriarchs had multiple wives and/or concubines.

The meaning of the passage is clear in both words and context.

    James 2
Clearly God does not think prostitution is that big a deal. Nor Jesus for that matter as shown by the quote of James.

Yet .. what do we see from the KJV and in numerous modern Bibles ?

Not only does this passage make no sense in context, it completely obfuscates the meaning.

Later editors were uncomfortable with the original version as it appears to condone "sex" and this just would not do.

We see this kind of artistic translation licence often in relation to passages about sex.

There are numerous other examples. Many Churches condemn alcohol claiming "God said so". Some have even gone so far as to change the most sacred of Christian rituals, the Eucharist, by substituting grape juice for wine. I have even had some of these people try and defend this by saying "wine really meant grape juice in the Bible" which is patent nonsense.

This is but a small sample of examples ... I could go on and on.

The THEORY of evalution explains itself...DUH...and there's more evidence for that than for all the made up stuff coming from religions which have NO facts to back them up.

I have no opinion on the Big Bang theory at all except the TV show with that name is beyond stupid.

There is more to both of those than just words on a page or words from the mouths of authority figures. Anyone can independently reproduce the research that provides evidence of the big bang and evidence of evolution.

And the lack unanimity for religious texts and doctrines is drastically different from that of scientific theories. Case in point, the supposed resurrection compared to something like natural selection. The bible has 4 (5, maybe?) different accounts of the resurrection. None of them can agree on who was there, if the tomb was open or not, stuff like that. The scientific experiments that explore natural selection? Everyone agrees on the details. They all agree on what happened and what was observed. The disagreement is on the impact of what is learned from those experiments.

So, with religious ideas, the only evidence we have supporting it is words. The evidence that it is made up is lack of consistency among those words, and lack of independently verifiable data. The evidence we have supporting scientific theories is repeatable, observable experimentation. The evidence that those theories are just made up is....
