    What are "the Poms?"

The closest thing I could come up with was "Pons" per the movie "Man in the High Castle" - i.e., a term for Japanese.

The British, comes from POHM or Prisoners Of Her Majesty.
POHMs were newly arrived British prisoners.

Unfortunately that is an urban legend. Linguists have tracked the term back and it originates from that most English of linguistic devices, rhyming slang.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_names_for_the_British

This is a short newspaper article from the 1920s, fairly close to the time when the term came into common usage, which talks about rhyming slang.

Now are they buying the nuclear subs or are we just...you know? Leaving them there?

I'm pretty sure the U.S. and U.K. have practiced such operations (not on Chinese targets obvious).

Yes, it's far too late. The horse bolted around the turn of the century.

Actually strong borders and a very strict immigration policy, is the best defence.

    **** the French

And now they have added New Zealand, South Korea and Vietnam to the dialogue and work of tempering China.

Well yes. I meant armed invasion by regular military. But migrant invasions can be just as dangerous in the long run.

He doesn't care because Trump is some kind of deity to them. They ignore anything and everything that refutes that. Lost cause, big fella.

Biden is Chinas gal. Its just posturing.

Now the French really are pissed because they had an agreement to build conventional subs for Australia.

Had Trump done this you all would be falling on your knees worshiping him for standing up to China. How do you look yourself in the mirror being so two-faced?

Now Australia is getting better subs, so **** the French.

Conventional subs are smaller, quieter & have sufficient range, so I can't see why they wouldn't be able to do the same job. Indeed, I would think the size & silence would be an advantage in coastal waters.

Australia was going to get new subs anyway, so it's not about standing up to China. I think the big story, and one that will have lasting fallout, is how the US and Australia screwed France over on this deal.

Of course, China isn't happy about it either.

The article says that France and Australia inked their deal in 2016. Does that mean they are now in breach of contract?

So what? France is pretty much the definition of a poor ally and has no interest in taking on China. Australia is America's most reliable ally and is committing in the biggest way to help deal with China. What is France going to do? There will be a bit of foot stomping & perhaps more moves toward a European Defence Force - something that will save the US money. Other than tha tit just doesn't matter.

Additionally, they were also jerking us around on the sub deal to the point where spending $AU2 billion to get out of it might be a saving. The money we were going to give the French is now going to the US. I'd call that a win/win.

Yes, and Biden has already worked to strengthen it. The Quad is about to have its second meeting of Biden's Presidential term. Additioanlly, Biden has worked on bilateral ties wiht those nations.

Agreed. They make up a reality they like and then demand the rest of us accept it too.

They are a lot smaller which means a far, far smaller mine carrying capacity.

I doesn't matter how many mines you carry if you get spotted.

In any case, laying mines in Chinese waters isn't a core capability for us.

BTW, I am loving all these right wing Americans suddenly jumping up & down because France is upset. Having spent 4 years being utterly contemptuous of the views of every other nation on earth, suddenly France being in a mood matters? Give me a break.
