because thats how bankruptsy works. the assets are sold to pay the creditors, some other company would buy those factories at bargain prices and start up new car companies. It would have been good for the industry, the workers, and the consumers: and it would not have cost the taxpayers anything.

But no, obama had to save the UAW so he could get their money and votes. Thats what the GM bailout was all about. We need to face reality on this fiasco.

Or... Maybe not. Think about it for a moment – why did GM die? A lot of it seems to have to do with the state of the economy. At that point, starting new companies to do what GM did would be bad business. Plus, at this point, you're leaving me to take your word for it, as I couldn't really find anything to back yourstatment up. And of course, I don't know if you realize this, but GM actually did go through bankruptcy. And what happened? They were loaned money by the administration to build the company back up. Not quite what you predicted.

See, I'm not buying this. Not one bit. You're going to have to do better than "I say so".

Chapter 11 is almost always better than a bailout. Chapter 11 will force a company to reorganize and fix its underlying problems and debt. Bailouts just throw money at a problem company and the management is more likely to acquire new assets and pay out bonuses than write off bad debt.

GM got in financial trouble because of ridiculous union wages and benefits, and poor management. The money that WE gave them has not been paid back, and its doubtful if it ever will be. But the UAW got a large share of the company stock so now GM is owned by the union and the government. Whoop de dooo! obama in action. How can you possibly think that is good for the country?

Actually fire is easy. There are already areas where fire service is optional and subscription or fee for service based. Police and military are the kinds of things that do require tax money, but there are only a handful of these kinds of things. The existence of such things by no means justifies anything close to the trillions of dollars our government actually spends.

Unregulated capitalism seems to be exactly what she advocates. In fact, she doesn't even believe in taxes. She wants an absolute laissez fair unregulated and free economy. You can hear that from her own mouth here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ooKsv_SX4Y

There's a great line about the nature of Ayn Rand's philosophy in Atlas Shrugged, and the book itself:

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

    Quite true.
