Now, I personally do not consider semi-auto rifles of any use for civilians. They are too bulk for effect home defense, a pistol is much more effective, and really, you get better results hunting with a bolt action, which is often more powerful.

But let's not pretend making semi-auto weapons illegal for magically stop all illegal gun deals.

A good sounding solution, yet not one which will have any serious impact on gun violence, of which the vast, vast majority is committed with pistols which are indeed legal in most of the world including Australia.

As far as the semi-automatic debate goes I think it's misleading to compare the US to Australia, much more accurate to compare NZ to Australia, as NZ still has legally obtainable semi-automatic rifles, with obvious licensing, for 3 gun sports.

That is all I've ever wanted as an Australian. The rest of the yank firearm laws are largely unique to their political history. All I want is some sort of legal pathway to responsible gun ownership including semi-automatics.
