No its not the cops job to facilitate protests, its the protestors job. Its pretty obvious antifa wasn't there to protest, they were there to riot.

Law and Order is the cops job, and they failed in Charlottesville, personally I think those cops were told by the mayor to allow the mayhem to continue so the media can cry on TV.

So basically they had to force a sort of tactical retreat. I guess that's probably fair if the crowds were large and disparate as I understand they were. Still, that being said, you'd hope the next rally is a bit better catered for by police.

Wrong. The cops are there to ensure law and order, which involves facilitating public events - ESPECIALLY protests. That is why you seek a permit, give an expected headcount, describe the activities planned, routes to take, time and place etc etc etc.

As 'lofty' as your idea is, its just not a practical or reasonable solution - especially when you dont even expect police to be able to facilitate a safe protest haha. Have you ever been to a protest turned violent? Its extremely hard to control or resolve even when it is localised and I its almost always impossible to "subdue and arrest all the rioters". Its much better to prevent it in the first place.

Its not about ******n antifa. Why are these protests so disorderly? In Melbourne we have nutjobs on both sides. Cops come in, pepperspray 30 people, beat a few more, send a few horses in. Its all over in an hour or two. You guys have a protest, gets out of hand and doesnt end until someone drives a car into a crowd of people.
