Ich kenne den Kram, habe damals schon gelebt. I'm fully aware of the events. My post was not meant to describe the chronological events and the domestic political details (of course the GDR was pretty much broke, despite F.J.Strauß' credit), but to point out the utterly absurd notion that Reagan's speech created a unified Germany, which is a painfully simplistic version of the events. I assume we can agree that the so-called Monday demonstrations were essential in what led to the reunification.

You pretty much answered why East Germans get less than west germans. I bet it’s known in Germany that employees who come from East will steal your company’s property and will abuse sick days benefits and will milk you to the max.
By the way, one shocking observation I made about the US when I moved here is the work ethic - (most) people here work hard and work honestly. Workplace theft is very uncommon. I know that in Europe that’s not the case. I worked with lots of people who could never use up all of their PTO here and with each new year the PTO is lost.
