News reports also say Griddy warned subscribers about the cost increases and advised them to change electric service providers. But subscribers were having problems executing that change in a timely manner.

A few random Tweets from Griddy customers said that other companies were telling them that they couldn't open a new service account unless they had a zero balance with their current provider....so Griddy customers were sort of stuck.

Apparently, energy providers put in bids every 5 minutes on how much they will sell their energy into the grid. Buyers take the lowest prices from sellers and make the purchase.

Griddy must have developed some software which updates as the wholesale price fluctuates hourly. Conceivable, customers could be paying 0.03/kWh one minute and 9.00/kWh the next minute then 4.00/kWh with the next update. Without the storm the fluctuations would be pennies up or down throughout the day, and not cause alarm.

Looking at their Twitter, they do a "day-ahead" forecast to set expectations. Looks like customer could pay almost zero or up to 0.30/kWh on a more "normal" day. Customers could probably plan laundry, cooking and other energy-using appliances to non-peak times and really save some money. "Normally". LOL

I haven't seen any links that this has been debunked. The official document is posted on the government's DOE website.

Personally, I've never "reported" any of my fellow members here because I don't think anyone should be banned for conversation. They should be able to show their character through free speech.
