The minimum wage has nothing at all to do with "lifting people up to middle class," however.

Some of the increased cost could get passed on to the real estate owner, assuming there is not sufficient alternate demand for that commercial space.

That's the problem with the conservative movement, you guys are too quick to push people away from your side of the argument. And you guys really can't afford to lose votes, and (*)(*)(*)(*)ting on people that are at least trying to earn a living instead of living off of welfare isn't the way to go. Giving people an increase in the minimum wage gets people off of food stamps, gets them into a better position to help themselves instead of relying on the government to help them.

It also injects more money into the economy.

Your argument is that it would cost jobs, maybe in the short term, but the stupid business owners that don't see that paying people a living wage helps everyone out including themselves just shoots themselves in the foot. People having more money to spend at their business in the long term helps those businesses better survive. People earn more money, they spend more money, the economy grows, businesses get more of that money back with the increase of customers, demand goes up, they need to hire more people the cycle continues and people stop living off the government and thus YOUR taxes.

But no, throw away more votes to us liberals, go ahead. That's a wise political strategy, so let's recap, you lost the black vote, the Latino vote, the women vote, the youth vote, the gay vote, and now you want to throw away the working poor vote. Good thinking! Tell us, is there any other demographic you want to alienate?

Try living independently on minimum wage and you'll have your answer.

The fact that one has living expenses doesn't give him the right to others' property.

What on earth are you babbling about? If an executive, for example, asks for a raise and gets it whose property is he robbing?

I thought I was quite clear. The fact that one has living expenses doesn't give him the right to others' property.

Why do you think he's robbing anyone?

Ok, let me be clear on this. Why do you consider a call for a living wage to be robbing anyone of their 'property', and what exactly is being robbed?

I never said that I consider a call for a living wage to be robbing anyone of their property, so I can't answer your question.

I said that the fact that one has living expenses doesn't give him a right to others' property.

You're going to have to explain your reasoning because I have no idea what you're on about. What's the link between a living wage and taking someone else's property-because that's what I'm reading in your post.

LOL - give me a break. The democrats hate poor people - that's why they enact legislation to make them dependent and keep them poor.

So you have no argument. In other words. You sound a little stingy to me. Why just $12/hr.? I propose every burger flipper makes $80,000/yr. I mean paying rent is nice, but what about cable TV? And saving for retirement? And those iPhones aren't gonna buy themselves! And once in a while a nice vacation... Why don't we propose to really lift these people out of poverty? It's not their fault they weren't born into wealth, is it? Everyone has a right to a nice vacation, don't you think?

First off, I don't have to -- I decided early in life to obtain a skill that employers would value and I am now quite amply compensated for my skills, experience, and knowledge. I made an investment in myself. Had I chose not to, perhaps I would be flipping burgers too, demanding that my employer pay me more than my labor is worth.

Second, you entire argument is based on the false premise that one person is entitled to the wealth of another by simply existing. Life is hard on minimum wage, I am sure. It should be. There's a great incentive to get an education. But don't think that gives you the right to the wealth and property of someone else.

Please offer a solution then instead of sewing hate. Looking at the business of it, efficiencies and profit go up and up yet wages for the lowest rung haven't changed and are really going down in actual value after inflation. The work that they do is earning the company more money. How do you justify not doing anything? How do you justify these businesses that have perfected giving nothing to anyone but the top. 90% income gains have been going to the top. Is this because they deserve it or they earned it? Probably not. Its probably just because they can. We are not powerless to shape our economy in a way that works for everyone that wants to work. I will stress wants to work. This isn't another lazy taker you can scapegoat everything on. This is a worker that wants to work and wants to take pride in their job and not feel like a pile of crap are continually minimized and forced onto assistance of some sort be it student loans or otherwise. I'm open for discussion on this. Have worked many crappy jobs but got into a good career with a lot of help.

Are you dense? Money, of course. The wages you say a burger flipper has a right to. That money is somebody else's property. The burger flippers expenses don't entitle him to other people's money.

I see. Are you so intimately familiar with a burger-flipper's living expenses that you can quantify what he does or does not deserve to earn, or are you making wild assumptions?

No, my argument is based on a simple concept; that of paying someone a living wage for a day's work. Whether you think a person in a menial job deserves it or not is irrelevant.

It has nothing to do with what I think is "deserved." The market determines the real value of anything, labor included. You want your labor to be highly-valued? Obtain a skill that employers highly value.

If that was true, then top bankers of loss making banks wouldn't continue to receive massive bonuses?

Sorry, that should of been "Higher wages do not mean that higher prices would necessarily have to be passed on to the consumer.

The wealthy are not "entitled" too a workforce, if the workers wish to unionize and go on strike to demand a decent living wage, then they have a right too
