The articles give no ideas to, conclude, that young supporters are non-existent or dying off.

 

Sometimes it's an admirable character trait to defend an undefendable position. You get wiped out, but if your defense is ferocious enough and makes the attackers pay a high price for their victory, the enemy may think twice before trying it again. Or you may set an inspiring example of courage.

Thus Texans honor the men of the Alamo, and Mexicans, the boys of Chapultepec Castle, all of whom fought to the death against invaders.

But ... in political argument, it's usually a bad idea to defend a bad position, even from your own point of view. It makes people take you less seriously. Someone who can say, whoops, I've changed my mind ... that's someone that I, anyway, will listen to more carefully in the future. They've showed that they think about things, and don't just have a reflex response. Even if they're my political enemy, I may be able to learn something of value from them.

The best "anti-Covington" case you can make is this: these young men behaved pretty damned well, under the circumstances. But ... could they have done even better?

Sure: they need to learn certain things.

(1) There are a lot of damaged people in the world. Some of these damaged people are that way because, in part, the human species is a nasty one -- I guess, for Christians, we can call it "original sin" -- and we've done terrible things to each other in the past: the treatment of Blacks and Native Americans in the US is one example, among many. Nobody's innocent: read a bit about how African tribes treat each other, or American Indians treated each other, and you'll see that. Whites were not any morally better than anyone else, they were just technically better at exterminating and enslaving. (That technical improvement later led to moral improvement, but that's another story.)

(2) Some of these damaged people -- who feel ashamed of their particular tribe -- will try to use their position as victims to gain some personal advantage. Or they'll retreat into fantasy. The professional Indian is the first case, the 'Black Hebrews', the second. But both are pathetic, not evil. They are not the moral equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan.

(3) How to respond to such people? Our first response should be pity . But that's 'should' , In the case of the 'Black Hebrews' and the professional Indian, our actual response is amused contempt -- we can't help it. But we ought to try to transcend that. And while the Covington boys are trying to be transcending, it's not wrong for them to give a thought to the fact that ... they're young, and white, and going to a good school. It's really true that they have advantages that these men probably didn't have. That doesn't make them evil, or the men good ... it's just a fact about which to be mindful.

(4) Lastly, and most important of all -- these young men must know that they do not live in a sane, fair society. The Radical Left has a lot of influence now, including over decent liberal people who ought to know better. Anything that someone who is not bowing down to the Radical Left does ... anything they say ... anything they write ... even a look ... can be turned by the Radical Left into proof of irredeemable racism-fascism-etc etc.

Louis Farrakhan can call Jews "the spawn of Satan" and the Radical Left and their gormless dupes in the mass media won't turn a hair. But the wrong expression on your face when a senile old lunatic has walked into your group and is banging his drum -- that can be turned by the Radical Left into a lynching offense.

It's a shame that life is this way, but, hey ... it's a conservative aphorism that "Life is not fair".

Is the media setting up a conflict narrative to keep people tuned in and sering ads? Of course. They're taking the silly racism of kids and with your help making it a big deal. By refusing to acknowledge the relatively benign racism of the kids, perhaps adding they should get a bit of instruction in how to deal with racism directed at them, you call your own judgment into question when you could have been effectively calling out Phillips, his Native American pals, and the really racist Black Hebrew Israelites.
