The technology measure is part of a proposed law on foreign investment that aims to address complaints by Washington, Europe and other trading partners that China’s system is rigged against foreign companies. ==================================================== That's called a "blink" in negotiations. This was proposed by none other than Xi himself. The fact that China would even talk about this items is a breakthrough. They are being hit hard by the tariffs, which I thought wouldn't not work and were a bad idea. It appears Trump was right, but we will never hear that in the Mainstream media.
The key now is to get a long-term deal with Bejing that cements that and other pro-reform commitments, so we can then take off the tariffs. If Trump can get this to work, it's another thing he can point to for the 2020 elections.
Did you also see how Mexico is now doing Trumps bidding? (They blinked also) https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...ico-the-government/ar-BBUgbIj?ocid=spartanntp
I've been raving for over two months that Trump should seal the border with Mexico SHUT and not allow anything or anyone to cross into the United States. Maybe somebody has whispered this possibility to both the Mexican business community, and to the Mexican government officials -- and that is something that Mexico definitely does NOT want, for all the obvious reasons! Hey, if Mexico will help us instead of laughing at us and looking the other way, we can work together for the mutual benefit to both countries, and that would be a great thing indeed!
Meanwhile over 42,000 have landed in the USA from foreign countries over the past two years and crossed our Northern border seeking asylum in Canada????
LOL.. I read the words Consider and Discourage right up top. Also, I recommend you look up the true meaning of the word placate. If the US has to be placated, we've already lost in their eyes. I hope you consider not being discouraged when this amounts to nothing..
Concern over intellectual property theft was one of the major concerns Trump expressed when calling for the tariffs imposed on China. This is a real issue and a major concern for the US due to the many high technology and pharmaceutical businesses. China's reliance on intellectual property theft might present problems for them in the future as they seek to maintain economic growth, because they lack the 'bench' to develop more advanced technology on their own. When Japan did this decades ago, they were able to gradually acquire the know-how and eventually develop improvements of their own, automobiles, watches, photographic cameras... made in Japan at first were not of very high quality, but nowadays Toyota cars, Citizen watches and Nikon cameras bring new technology to the market. China has bullet trains, is building aircraft carriers, developing robotics, electric cars -with stolen technology. We don't really know about the quality, we don't have many of these products in our markets yet, I suppose they may be comparable, probably of slightly lower quality and precision, they'll figure out how to improve that, but I doubt they will have the time to actually acquire and truly assimilate the stolen technology so they can make improvements on it. China doesn't have the decades Japan had, there will be major problems in China that will prevent major capital investment in technology development in the near future.
As long as American companies keep flocking to China for their market and production, technology will be lost.
What I'm saying is that the significance of this intellectual property theft diminishes over time in the China case. I think this is because China needs to the capacity to actually develop the technology on its own and this takes longer than China has.
If you mean they lack experience, I agree. But they have been flooding our best universities for years.
True, but China seeks to develop very high technology, AI in cutting edge robotics, hypersonic commercial transportation, very advanced surveillance through facial recognition and comprehensive social media monitoring, alternative energy (including solar, biomass, tidal, aeolic and fusion), medical diagnostics and pharmaceuticals... All of these require more than just purloined IP, they need to build upon the existing technology and the background knowledge behind it. Some of that can be gained from their studies, but it takes independent research incentivized by a system that rewards initiative rather than commands advancements according to centralized dictates. Moreover, China confronts the inescable demographic brick wall of its “one child” policy; too many unproductive seniors and not enough young productive people to provide for them. Additionally the Chinese millennials are not affluent enough to sustain the advanced technology envisioned, there simply aren’t enough hypersonic travellers and robotics purchasers to credibly sustain a level of domestic demand that makes it attractive to develop these fields. Whether the government there can sustain such development for years is increasingly in doubt. One needs to consider deficits and the reality behind so much opacity in Chinese economic data. I’ve been monitoring this for years, it is unsustainable, analysts disagree on the magnitude, but most anticipate a somewhat traumatic conclusion.
I don't know..... When you consider where they started from their progress is phenomenal. But of course you are right. There is no way they can catch up in every field in a short period, but then again every successful project adds to their knowledge. I think from that standpoint they must manage what projects they undertake. We all suffer the aging problem. Yeah, there is no way they can continue 10% GDP. I don't know how many more people they have yet to bring in from the agricultural economy to the production economy, but it seems like the belt and road is an attempt to capture more markets to support more production. But your right it's big bucks.
China's is much worse. Within a few years China will be in a demographic situation similar to Japan's today. Western Europe is in bad shape too, in the US the problem is mitigated by immigration. This is a serious issue, all those pension plans and Social Security funds will not suffice, and the problem will worsen as life expectancy rises.
china did the same as japan in 70, Skorea in 80-90s did. reverse engineering, follow by improve it, follow by making their own products. less time, less $$, less R&D. China is in a transitional period where they start making their own IPs. so for them, the next decade will be good if they implement IP protection. Not only it will satisfy Trump but also protect their own IPs in the future. China is not gonna cave in on Trump demand of subsidizing their industry, they will do it if they consider its beneficial to them.
WHY WOULD CHINA BLINK???Since the tariffs supposedly to alter their behavior were put in place, our trade imbalance has grown month by month. The trade deficit in 2018 was a full 20% higher than it was in 2016 Obamas last year???The tariffs are not slowing down our imports and not helping our exports.
