Attorneys for Covington junior Nick Sandmann made a splash this week when they sent letters to 54 news outlets, lawmakers, celebrities, media figures and Catholic institutions asking them to preserve information related to the episode and warning of a possible lawsuit.

“There was a rush by the media to believe what it wanted to believe versus what actually happened,” attorney Todd McMurtry told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Libel and defamation cases are notoriously difficult to win, but Mr. McMurtry is working with famed attorney L. Lin Wood of Atlanta, who represented the family of 1996 murder victim JonBenet Ramsey as well as Richard Jewell, the falsely accused Olympic Park bomber.

Those receiving the preservation letters included The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, National Public Radio, The Hill, The Atlantic, and TMZ, as well as more than two dozen journalists such as MSNBC’s Joy Reid and NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, who interviewed Mr. Sandmann on the “Today” show.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota Democrat, were also included. So were celebrities Jim Carrey, Kathy Griffin and Alyssa Milano, as were the Diocese of Covington and Archdiocese of Louisville.

Meanwhile, attorneys with another Northern Kentucky law firm — Poston, Siefried and Schloemer — confirmed that they represent the families of other teens involved in the incident, which occurred after the boys participated in the 46th annual March for Life.

This is how you stop this nonsense. Maybe the 54 can hire Obama's apologist.

What exactly will they sue for?

Libel and slander suits typically require four tests to prove damages, this case would likely fail on two of these. In additional the liability for repeating defamatory statements faces even more scrutiny — seeing that all the “news” does is repeat what is told to them, it doesn’t look like this case will go far. Look at the issues the sandy hook families have faced against a proven malicious lie by info wars for a recent example.

But it’s relatively free publicity for the law firm involved.

So you approve of the news lying about kids doing absolutely NOTHING wrong? Trying to ruin their lives? Calling them racists, violent? Guess as long they’re white, they just guilty for breathing...;)

With all that we know now....it's amazing you have so much hatred. Since this kid did nothing wrong, it must be because hes white or Catholic.

And I imagine the reason why the suit comes into play, is because the false information broadcast across the media created a threat to the kids and their families from people who display mindless hatred.

The "news" might repeat what they are told, but when they are wrong they have to issue a retraction, which did not occur.

All what took? Where you trolling for a response to show you how wrong you were in your assessment about the kid? Yeah he smirked, like so many others have done very recently on the stand in front of congress. His though, was a smirk of awkwardness because he didn't know how to react to some crazy old guy coming up to bang a drum in his face.

Only in America could adults be upset that a teenager is suing news outlets for lying about him and his story.

I would think everyone would applaud this move, if for nothing else it keeps the media in check and ensures responsible journalism.

But some people cant stand to be wrong, and others would refuse to admit despite knowing it.

There was more to the story as there usually is but what did most of the media report — that was inaccurate — that would warrant a defamation of character lawsuit? There were a few individuals that were calling for personal harm against the kids and I hope that they are held accountable but likely will not be — but most of the stories reported on the smirk (which was true), the surrounding of the Native Americans (which was true), the “tomahawk chop” which many say is a racial insult (which was true), the build the wall chant (which was another group of students but still true)...

That the kids surrounded and taunted the indian activist. That the kids chanted "build that wall". That the kids mocked the guy. All of these things are akin to calling them racist and harassers of the old man.
The news outlets were wrong in their reporting, they didn't issue a retraction. The kids didn't surround him, the guy walked calmly into the middle of their group. The "smirk" was nothing and has nothing to do with the lawsuit. Never heard of the "tomahawk chop" or saw it in the video. Never heard the students chanting "build the wall" in any videos. The media in their rush to "report" on stories is what caused the harm by portraying the kids in such the worst light when they did nothing of what was originally reported. And then the news outlets didn't retract, the actually doubled down by featuring the instigator, the Indian, in several interviews where they allowed him to lie not only about the kids but about his own past as well.

This goes poorly for the news outlets. They'll be short cash and owe some air time to the kid soon enough.

Some would consider the “chop” hand motion to being a racist action. So again that isn’t really a lie on the students — it is subjective.

Ok — even saying the American Indian was lying, is the narrative really that media outlets are responsible for what their guests say? If so it will be an interesting situation for many of the commentators on Fox News from the trump administration.

The chop is seen in the long video and in several shorter ones as is the imitation of his chant.

The American Indian did walk into the middle of them but then encircled him — again, not necessarily a lie, but rather different prospectives of events. Trump supporters typically view the events one way and non-Trump supporters view the events differently.

I think the only real agitators here were the black Israelites which just about everyone has given a pass on.

Even after knowing the truth, leftists still feel it's okay to attack the white boy for smiling. Only because he's white and conservative. Had this been a latino boy with a Mexican flag hat, the response from the dems would be far different and they'd be calling for Phillip's head on a platter.
