But the important point here ...

Allies whose current proportion of GDP spent on defence is below this level will:

• halt any decline in defence expenditure;
• aim to increase defence expenditure in real terms as GDP grows;
• aim to move towards the 2% guideline within a decade with a view to meeting their NATO Capability Targets and filling NATO's capability shortfalls.

This means that all who did not meet this 2% in 2014 should work within a decade = 2024 to meet the 2%. This also means that from 2024 there is a contractual obligation to meet the 2%!

At the moment we have 2019 ... not 2024! So we do not have the obligation to fulfill the 2% already in 2019!

But we Germans are on the way there and spend steadily and considerably more money on defense ...
In 2014, our budget was € 32.4 billion ... about $ 36.5 billion.
In 2019, the budget is € 43.2 billion ... about $ 49 billion! So in 5 years about 30% more money invested!

 

Your hint that UK depends on US for help in case of a potential attack ... what yu present as fact!

Both of you ... you and me ... know definitely that in the approximately 650 billion USD = 3.6% of GDP are definitely a lot of costs that have nothing to do with NATO, Europe or pure US national defense ... the question is just how much in USD and% in detail. So far both of us are already compliant at this point?

You can not say it like that ...
Of course, if the USA leaves NATO, NATO or whatever the new name would be then, immediately loses all of its contingent, etc. ... which would undeniably be a drastic reduction.

But ... if you count the forces of the Europeans in the individual categories, then that is already conventional from a considerable force.
With Canada, for example, there are still 1,836,100 soldiers left without hte US in 2018 ... the US alone had 1,307,000 soldiers.
Of course, one can now begin to discuss how far everyone else would still be in the Alliance. In other words ... some would probably also quit or not be adopted. In the latter case, Turkey is a certain candidate to fly out, which would then be 386,000 fewer soldiers.

I do not want to continue with tanks, planes and ships ... but just mention that even without the US there would still be a considerable nuclear arsenal in the UK and France. It could also be that other countries rethink whether they do not want to have their own nuclear weapons.
