Well here is the thing who will decide what is obese? How would you tax someone? Would you have to do a weekly weigh in by the government? Then if that would be the case would we tax the parents obese children? What if you are obese but live off the government? Too many variables and quite frankly couldn't really be enforced.

Dude you realize that joining the military you can't be overweight? They weigh you before you sign up. If your overweight, by determining your height. It's very simple. It is being enforced as we speak without the tax part of it.

You're sure right about that. Recently a 10-12 yr old female gymnast was told by the school that she's fat, according to the BMI thingy they used to test her with..... like you said, Mike, it tested her muscle... idiots....

No, I'm not .... it's the principle of the matter and also I would call the 'fat tax' discrimination.... besides being unconstinutional....

    Can we tax stupid too?
I think stupidity has got to be AT LEAST as costly to the collective US as being fat.

I was always over the max allowed weight my whole career... I was in great shape though and aways passed my pt test with a 270 or better out of 300. They would then measure my waist, height, and neck for my body fat percentage which I was always under. I worked with guys who were 135 pounds who were weaker than most women. Like I said the government doesn't make anyone sign the contract, you sign it on your own ,and follow the standards set forth by the military. You simply can not tell a civilian to come in for a weight check cause they can simply tell you to shove it. There is no way it can be enforced, cause it is too dicey and politicans would never go for it on either side.

It would be better to impose properly this fat tax as this will be one of the tools on how we can minimize death/sickness cause of heart failures. This will also transform citizen's image from obese to a sexy one. This will also lessen cost on medicines or any surgeries for obese patient. And even our children will be subjected to a heart failures at their younger age once we can't control their healthy eating habits.....that's why "fat tax" is so essential for us to regulate properly in a way that the manufacturers of these fatty/unhealthy foods will be their major concern. They will focus more on a fat burning foods that really gives a natural health vitamins to all the consumers.

I would like to see a tax on people who ignore contractions and use "you" when "you're" is called for.

I get really irritated with the constant invoking, fraudulently of cost as an excuse for controlling people. Oh, we have to have a fat tax because fat people driving up health care costs. Of course, the CDC admitted figures they posted on their website about costs of obestity were bogus. And, tobacco taxes. Health concerns. How about a tax for minutes of television watched each day? How about a tax on reading a book when they should be exercising? Health care costs again. How about a tax on internet use?

When it's time to control what people do with their property it's property values that come up. "Oh, if we let him paint his house blue our property values will plummet."

How about a tax for voting for liberals? That costs all of us a bloody fortune. Well, except those on the dole.

I hope the 12 who voted for this don't live in the United States with me...

I don't even have a good word to describe a body mass tax because it's so unthinkably unjustifiably stupid.

It's progressivism that drives up healthcare costs. Progressives want to blame everyone else for the problems that they create.

The best "fat tax", government don't cover their medical expenses, then we aren't pulling money from others to pay for the treatment of someone else and we aren't paying some jackass bureaucrat to judge what needs to be taxed. It is a win win. Man, libertarian views are awesome.

I am a graduate of diversity training so I know which groups it is acceptable to hate. Fat people are near the top of the list. Well above pedophiles, rapists, deadbeats, junkies, and crooked politicians.

Why not just allow health insurance companies to price plans based on individual behavior and history? Obese/unhealthy and other high-risk people would just pay higher premiums.

there should also be a fit tax, because people exercising breath more and thus emit more co2. so we should tax the fat people for being fat, the fit people for being fit, and the fat people for trying to get fit. and then we should tax some more just for (*)(*)(*)(*)s and giggles.

Where in the Constitution does it give the government the right to do this? A government that can force that, can do almost anything it wants to do. I, personally, don't like that idea.

Please show evidence that obesity shortens lifespan. The lifespan in our country has gone up as our obesity rate has gone up.

Ron Paul speaks about this. This is the beauty of a free society. You are RESPONSIBLE for yourself and only those you personally and privately wish to be responsible for. I have the constitution here and it says nothing about the ability of the government to tax a persons body. Oh wait the 16 amendment allows Congress to have the right to tax our income or the fruits of our labor so therefore our bodies...but also it specifically says INCOMES not people.

Many years ago I was buying a carton of cigarettes. Our state had a ballot initiative to add a massive tax on cigarettes. The clerk at the little grocery sneered and said, "What will you do when we get our cigarette tax?"
"Probably buy my cigarettes in Wyoming on Sunday when I'm up there buying gasoline without our taxes and crappy additives but what are you going to do when we get our fat tax?"

It seems Ameicans always support tax increases on someone else.
