The real political spectrum stretches from those who want very limited government and expansive individual liberty and those who embrace any of the totalitarian models.

People identified as left and right, conservative and liberal can be found all across the real spectrum. The labels are deceptive.

Well, you don't want to confuse small r republicanism with Big R Republicanism, I'll give you that.

I put small r republican on the Right because we commonly describe the Right as Conservatives, and that is what Conservatives are Conserving, our republican form of government. From the Declaration to the Constitution our Founding and Framing documents are a full throated rejection of Totalitarianism. I understand the Europe is different as are other parts of the world. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, those committed to the preservation of the Monarchy were described as Conservatives and Right-wing. It makes absolutely no sense to apply those meanings to these terms here.

Right and Left are positional, so to understand the terms you relate them to what they are positioned to. In this Nation it is the US Constitution and The Declaration. If you are for CONSERVING those commitments to INDIVIDUAL Liberty, you are a Conservative.

The main alternative in the country is "Progressive" totalitarianism, a Left-wing movement, where the "credentialed" think they are entitled to run everything, lording over those they refuse to credential, because of course, Progressives also control the credentialing process.

In fact, that is what lies at the bottom of the Deep State's explosion over the election of Donald Trump. They don't view him as "Credentialed" so they do not seem him as exercising "Legitimate" authority over them. They view their role to be to destroy him, or at least man The Alamo until Progressives again regain control of the Federal Government. They really aren't unlike the ISIS deadenders hiding out in the Canyons of the Caliphate thinking that if they can just hang on that they will sweep back into the power that is their manifest destiny.

These clowns are also very big on the Arc of History forever bending Left. The progressive movement came out of the Left-Wing Christian Church and it embodies all the moral self-righteousness of a toxic religion.

Yes, Conservatives have been infiltrated by the big government types. The nomination of Trump was the Republican Base in open revolt against the Republican Establishment and despite our deep conflict, we maintained greater unity than the Left that split between Bernie The Socialist and Hillary the Crook.

Essentially, our base won the primary, their base lost, and went on to lose the Election.
