Sensibility would tell us to side on caution. Idiocy would tell us to keep on driving. Think about that when you think you have a right not to wear a mask. A wise person once said, "Highly contagious viruses with no cure don't care about our "freedoms".

A virus may be highly contagious(and it is), yet for many people they had been either asymptomatic, or virus free for months. Considering that we've had 14 million tests and 1.5 million positives. That's about an 11% positive rate. If we extrapolated that over the country, that'd mean we'd have 36 million of our fellow citizens affected with the virus.

That of course is a really big number, and it still means some 294 million Americans have no contact with the virus.

That extrapolation holds if you test everyone and the rate is the same, it's possible that the rate could rise but it's also possible that it could deflate.

What I don't understand is this feeling among some that having private businesses tell them that they can't do business inside that place of business violates Constitutional rights. For over 100 years, businesses have had, "No Shirts, no shoes, no service," rules or some had tie and jacket requirements, and the conservatives had no problems ... but add "face masks" and suddenly THAT is a Constitutional crisis?

    Whatever.

I don't know where you're reading or getting that from, but no one is saying not to wear face masks inside a place of business, everyone rallied around the Dallas salon owner because she had common sense policies before the unfair judge attacked her.

I see that Alabama has been experiencing a 50% increase in cases since reopening. The problem fo rural red America is they don't don't have the medical facilities to deal with it.Some people lean through observation. Some learn through reading, but there are always those who only learn by pissing on the electric fence themselves.

I saw just the other day that a hospital in some small Alabama county had one ICU bed, ONE, and that it was full and that anyone who needed the sort of life saving COVID attention would need to travel almost 2 hours to a larger facility. Two hours for someone who cant breathe is basically a death sentence.

People acting like this virus is finished, people who are flagrantly flaunting social distancing because "muh rights", you are all are complicit in the deaths this new surge will bring. How will you be judged by God? You put your bud lite and your beach parties and you selfish desires ahead of the safety of your community. Be so very proud of yourselves.

It's gone from 300 to 503 today here in Alabama. 66%. We have the facilities to handle we've had no problems there. It's the jump that is worrisome as things have opened. I went to my watering hole last week when there were just a couple of people there and had one and the left. Wanted to go this weekend but decided best to wait a couple of more weeks to see how the numbers go.

Florida had a huge spike a few days ago, then a couple days of high averages, then another huge spike yesterday. But mathematically speaking we haven't reached the cusp of whatever damage our re-opening efforts would have done and it will be another 10 or so days before we see the damage our states incredibly selfish ignorant and arrogant Memorial Day partying hordes have done. Stay safe!

And sadly it will not be until one of their loved ones is dying in ICU that they will realise what the danger really was

The other side of the coin is that 5 months in, as the crowds at the beaches over the weekend show, the crowds do not buy into the social distancing thing. One possible reason for that is, like here in Florida, there are many mostly young people who have had the infection and survived.

For the older farts like myself, it is at the point where you know dozens who have been infected and are fine today. What to think?

How many of those 50% increase in cases (using your number literally) required hospitalization?

And that just proves my point. "I'm fine, so I can go out and do whatever I want." Do you think all their friends have survived the virus? Are immune? If not, we know that peer pressure will encourage them to join their 'immune' friends for a day at the park or the beach.

And common sense would dictate that you inform the proper authorities that the bridge is washed out and then take an alternative road to your destination.

The number of cases is meaningless unless normalized by the number of tests. Increased testing results in increased cases.
    -------------

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s May 26 10:30 a.m. numbers show 15,194 cases in the state, 4,743 reported in the last 14 days. The state has tested 192,602 people to date, 72,489 in the last 14 days. The overall positive rate for all those tested is 7.9%, a figure that drops to 6.5% in the last two weeks.

Good, let them ALL learn the Hard way... The right have been living and always DYING by the rump and neocon. Conspiracy theory BS since 2016. Everything that came up against Trump was taken down by leverage, not by LAW. They are skirting LAW and why his time is up come November. Of course we will have to live thru 6 months on FOX and Hannity claiming cheating, you know, the buss full of Mexicans, and millions of fake ballots cast for someone other than Trump.
It is just insane to watch Dumb, Gullible people fall for the same sh*t YoY.... QANON Much !

I do not care if the business dictates it, that is their right and I have the ability to do business with them or not.

When the govt does it I have an issue.

You give up your liberty, but keeps your damn hands off giving mine up and we will be OK.

And if someone wants to drive off a bridge I’m fine with that too so the OP is pointless.

How are you going to be judged as famine sweeps across the third works killing children because of the economic shut down you endorsed? You going to proudly boast of the 75 years you saved as 5 year olds starve to death.

Want to talk about regional warfare that will break out for the same reason and what that will do?

Big picture thinking is not your strength I take it..

I guess that would depend on if you think your liberty includes getting other people sick. What's the old saying, "Your rights end where my nose begins ...".

And as we are seeing in Brazil, deciding not to shut down has it's problems as well. Brazil decided to ignore the outbreak, and
not shut anything down, and now the virus is exploding and it looks like they'll end up shutting down anyway. We will
have to see how nations that shut down hard and fast compare in the end to those who did not take it seriously, both in economic terms and lives lost.

It may be that there were no great answers in the end. Best we can do is learn that viruses are a serious threat in the
future and start planning for the next one well in advance.
