Cis isn't an acronym. It's the opposite of trans. A cisgendered person is one whose sex and gender match, as opposed to the mismatch of transgendered individuals.

 

I’ve seen a number of definitions including yours but why is it Cis is so often used as a blatant insult ?

 

Why is trans? And honestly that's contextual. When some mention cis people, yeah they are using it as an insult. Others, like me, use it when it's important to note the difference between cis and trans

I think its also about the phases of any cultural or political movement, which first needs to gain attention, and to gain and maintain a unique sense of identity apart from the majority and dominant culture in order to better stay united. It needs to be more oppositional in defining itself and a little less tolerant of those who do not fully commit to the 'revolution', as opposed to than the next generation which turns the movement more inward, more personal and less strident and separatist. Think of the difference between first, second and third wave feminism.

To sell and distribute the political message of action and unity, you had to celebrate the values on which your distributer depended for profit. If you wanted your gay magazine or political pamphlet or poster where gays could find it, you had better re-enforce the values on which gay bars, gay bathhouses and gay porn producers depended for clientele. But now gay men have softball teams, are seen in mainstream movies, hallmark cards, choirs. They have kids, go to church and get married, and businesses can make a buck from gay sobriety, monogamy and stability. Voila problem solved.
