I was never into Metalcore,Rap, or NuMetal and these bands like Ghost are a circus act, clown show - the closer you look at them - the sheer fact they are lip syncing, miming drum parts, or using programmed loops like Slipknot ...

according to this ticket buyer ...

"I saw Ghost twice last year and did I expect backing tapes to be used for the choral parts?? Yes, I knew and expected that. I don't think they'd bring an entire choir with them on tour, although that would be pretty damn cool. I got to see the bus/trailer after the show and the trailer for their gear was quite small. They had no amps. They ran everything through and computer headstack/amp simulators DI'ed to the board. That cuts back on set up/tear down time considerably, not having amps onstage. So yeah, I can understand where some things need to be pre-recorded and canned. But to pre-record almost everything and semi-play to the backing track, thats just plain cheating. Thumbs down for corporate rock."

More onstage fakery ... miming drum parts, backing tracks, etc.

Four Types of "Tricks" Rock Stars Use Live
    Chris Lane | January 2, 2015

"Musical Gear You See Onstage Isn't Always Real Recently there was a flap involving a hard-rock band called Black Veil Brides when someone took a photo of their onstage amplifiers from behind, revealing that the wall of speaker cabinets was shells, just hollow dummies placed onstage to look cool as a backdrop. This has been a common practice for years, especially among hard rock and heavy-metal bands who like the image of a huge wall of amplifiers onstage.

Since there is no practical reason to actually be playing through more than one or two amps live, chances are anytime we've seen bands play in at least 30 years where a wall of amps and speakers was behind them, they've been either unplugged or just gutted shells. Someone going to see a huge band where a singer plays a guitar on a few songs might also be surprised to find that in a lot of cases, that guitar is making very little sound, if any, in the actual mix that the audience hears."

I like some of it. I have an eclectic taste in music so I'm not a purist about these things.

I can remember seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their first tour - they did a gig in a courtyard at the university I attended and then a show at a small nightclub later that night - and back then (before Hillel Slovak off'ed himself) they were kind of a metal-rap fusion band. Metal had gotten pretty stale by the mid-80s so experimental bands like the RHCPs were a breath of fresh air. However, I don't care much for the music they're making nowadays - they've gone too light and fluffy and commercial for my liking.

LOL @ Ghost. I had to look them up and I can't say I'm even curious about their music.

Some of those Death Metal and Devil Rock bands are ridiculous. I couldn't even tell you the name of the band but I remember watching one of their videos at some concert (probably in Scandanavia somewhere) and they had a severed goat's head on stage. I mean, really? Not surprisingly, their music was nothing to rave about. They reminded me of what became of my old buddies in GWAR - all show and not much in the way of quality music. Believe it or not, GWAR's original line-up actually had some talented musicians in it but the emphasis on stage spectacle and other forms of visual art that had nothing to do with music prompted them to leave and form other bands that were serious about making good music. After that GWAR went completely to crap.

I remember a buddy had this house party and he was rolling this pile of blunts in 1990s. He said,
"I got the new Slayer." I said "Wow" as "Killing Fields" came on. "Dave Lombardo isn't playing drums on it," I said, reading the liner notes. I'll never forget the look on his face. It was like his dog died. The party came to a halt all of a sudden. Some time later I said,"something is missing". It was the abundance of Hanneman song credits, and Lombardo. Now 10 pages of Motorhead junk, trinkets, vests and vibrato

    HAHAHAHAHAHA :roflol:

The difference between those pretentious clown metal bands and my buddies in GWAR is that Brockie & Co. never took themselves seriously. It was all shits and art school giggles and the fact that it helped pay the bills was just bonus.

They were probably the biggest band to come out of Richmond (VA) until Lamb of God came along. I never got into LoG, but to each his/her own...

No offense to you or your buddies, but GWAR is an absolute farce that brings down Thrash Metal, Gothic Metal, and those who do think it is an important, relevant, art form. Lars said the
other day, like he said in interviews in the 1990s after 'And Justice' was released, that Metallica
decided to change the musical direction because 'they could not write anything more Progressive than Dyers Eve.' We all know how hard songwriting is, so I'm not gonna bash Metallica. Even as Slayer became somewhat stuck in uptempo songs ( esp. when copycats Dark Angel, Death Angel, Sepultura and 300 other groups try ripping off your sound ). But actually, Lars can see 'No Leaf Clover, Memory Remains, Until it Sleeps, I Disappear' are pretty Progressive sounding, and stand out. Voivod made some records that fans dig a lot that were not blistering Thrash. Voivod Snake had a melodic coach in the liner notes, on the major label Angel Rat disc, produced by Rush guy Terry Brown, a Thrash guy using his diaphragm to sing it shows in the performance too. Angel Rat is one of Voivods best. To rely too much on one producer: Rick Rubin, Andy Sneap, or Bob Rock, albums sound very dry and similar. The fans understand Metal isn't a Loudness War contest, nor does it have to be a scream contest who yells the loudest since Pantera came, or since Weiland and Co. ripped off Danzigs 'Twist of Cain' riff in 'Sex Type Thing' and had a hit video. Anyone try talking the lyrics like Bowie or actually sing like Scabbia anymore? Bands rely too much and too long on screams, F-bombs, and Shock Lyrics. People, esp. singers are always screaming, saying F-bombs, on the radio or onstage, it's gotten so silly. Metal is also not a speed contest, a distortion war, a violence display, and try and make the lead harmony, notes audible. Just make a good setlist. Lacuna Coil had a great 2002 Comalies club tour at House of Blues. They have a different touring group now, I would buy their DVD had it sounded more raw, a little distorted, [not so clean on the production guys, more intense,] had their onstage keyboards, and not had the clown show. The first 3 Lacuna Coil discs were great, then they gave up on guitar leads, keyboards, and put more NuMetal repeat rap chorus 4 minute tracks. Rage Against Machine and Korn? No thanks.

PS. Don't forget to buy your Iron Maiden dollys, action figures:roll:

No offense taken. They are an absolute farce and they'd probably tell you they're an absolute farce by design. Like I said, unlike those pretentious clown metal bands they never took themselves and their music seriously.

Yeah, Metallica is another metal band that ran out of creative juice by the late 1980s. I was pretty much through with them after 'Justice'. Furthermore, the end of the Cold War rendered the themes and to some extent the identities of bands like Metallica and Megadeth obsolete. In many respects they had no choice but to change or die.

That's another thing that started going down the crapper in the 80s - vocals. How Metal went from vocalists like Rob Halford to the screamers you hear today is somewhat of a head scratcher but I guess it speaks to the general decline of the genre. Perhaps the sad fact of the matter is that Heavy Metal, like Jazz, reached its zenith years ago, which is why I never minded seeing groups take the genre in new and different directions. Of course, some bands took it in the direction of crap, just as some musicians took Jazz in the direction of crap. Unfortunately, I can relate to how fans of the golden age of Jazz (the 50s and early 60s) would rather perform a full frontal lobotomy on themselves than listen to Kenny G.

I can do without Rage but I liked Tom Morello's creativity. As for Korn, I don't care for most of their stuff but they do have some songs I really like, mostly the real heavy stuff that is somewhat reminiscent of Black Sabbath.

LMAO - Who buys that sh*t?

Fair enough. But do you like Ozzy Sabbath or Dio Sabbath better? I'm a Dio fan he's a great Live
performer, plus his records were heavier with Vinny Appice on drums.

    Talon -

Check out this short concert clip - just like the backing tracks articles above claim -

about some Indie, Pop, and Metallers miming Live concerts to Laptop recordings:

Ride at 17 min. 44 sec. ..... you can clearly see the drummer and bass player are NOT PLAYING
their "Catch You Dreaming" single -- (miming Live.) Lame !

Ride, full set live Barcelona 01-06-2018, Primavera Sound Forum

Same here - Slowdive miming to backing tracks -- Neil Halstead miming Live, Big time lame !

For the most part I prefer the original lineup but I liked Dio Sabbath, too. I saw the latter on the Black & Blue Tour in 1980 with BOC and they put on a great show. As I recall, they helped wreck my hearing, too - that might have been the loudest concert I ever attended.

Speaking of Vinny Appice, I think I saw him or his brother Carmine with Rick Derringer at the Bayou in DC years ago. That was a surprisingly good concert, too - Derringer had come a long way from "Hang on Sloopy" by that point.

    I can't get into that ****.

I had a chance to see Buckethead once and when I heard he was going to be accompanied by recordings instead of a band I blew it off. Call me old fashioned but I can't abide by musicians playing to that in concert.

Speakin' of Buckethead, I've always liked this little clip of him with his old bandmates from Praxis and Les Claypool...

Now, Praxis was a helluva band. I ragged out my cassette of Transmutation eons ago...

My sister said Primus went out with U2 or somebody, absolutely blew them off the stage.
Tim Alexander rocks. Wish I could play like that. I heard this disc at an in store booth when it was released, Anti-Pop is heavy as hell. Your comp. speakers can't do it justice, needs a big stereo. Blammo. Huge sound. Now I know you won't dig this but this what is best the last 18 years - the
Gothic Metal from Europe. I've posted this stuff before, only got a like on it once before. Got their
live VHS but the tube clips people put up sounded bad. Notice to Thrash/Gothic Metal: don't remaster your discs - I heard a couple old Exodus discs were and man were they compressed. Sucked. Sounded like Tempestas snare was overdubbed maybe not. Please guys the Maiden and Master of Puppets remaster was a mistake - don't remaster Hell Awaits ! I got Voivod War and Pain remaster and was lucky, guys at Metal Blade were cool when I complained got a refund. Leave Thrash/Gothic metal analogue. HD is a fad. Metallers don't buy big subwoofer speakers on their sets like Rap, Hip Hop guys. Rap is one dimensional. The kick drum is the only instrument they got. We don't need Surround. We got Yamaha. Technics, EQs junk like that. My analogue discs you can full blast, no distortion, no compression. The couple, 3 HD Metal discs like Thy Kingdom Gone, and Amanathes are OK, but my Century Media analogue are all just fine, thanks.

Far and away their best CD/album, in my opinion. I'm a big fan of Larry LaLonde, too - he really got a chance to shine on Anti-Pop.

Go ahead and post more of it. Like I said earlier, I've got an eclectic taste in music...

Not exactly my cup of meat but I find the juxtaposition of vocals interesting. It kinda reminds me of other bands where the singer can switch from soaring to snarling vocals. Chad Gray of Mudvayne immediately comes to mind but my personal favorite was HR from Bad Brains:

How such an enormous voice could come out of a tiny soft-spoken dude like him always amazed me.

That being said, it was Dr. Know's guitar work that hooked me. They were a great thrash band but I like their stuff that has a more "conventional" metal sound, too...

Easily, the best Rastafarian band of all time.

It's bummin' me out how too many of the dudes my age are either getting killed (Dime), passing away (his brother Vinnie) or offing themselves, like Chris Cornell...

Listening to Soundgarden's lyrics you could hear that Cornell was a suicide case waiting to happen. I'm somewhat amazed he lived to see his 50s...:(

Ozzy's back on tour with Zakk Wilde?

    Aye carumba.

I have to admit my favorite Zakk tune is his acoustic rendition of "White Christmas". Come back and listen to it next month:

Merry Axemas Vol. 2 is actually a pretty good Christmas album...
