The House Democrats had their chance to put together their impeachment in the House. They did so and the members of the House voted on THAT evidence to impeach and send it to the Senate for removal or not base on that evidence. The Senate now sits and listen to that evidence the case they made in the articles of impeachment. And the Democrats as the minority do not decide who gets called as witnesses, just as the Democrats blocked Republicans in the House so can the Republicans the Democrats in the Senate. After the House managers have presented their case then the Senate can vote to see if they want to question any of the witnesses in the impeachment, as happened in the Clinton impeachment. This is not more investigation, more deposing new witnesses building a new case.

The judge did not say executive privilege did not apply, his ruling was how to implement it.
