The idea of clearing areas held by ISIS (ISIL) like Mosul, Iraq simply do not work. There is not winning a warm on religion. That is what this war is about, we have seen it time and time again. We go into a "no-go zone" such as Mosul and fight a very hard and long battle. Once this is done, we then take control of the area by having road blocks, curfews and foot/convoy patrols. Once we try to hand over control to the local population, it all turn back into chaos since they do not have the training, mindset and leverage needed to maintain order. Courts are almost none existent, local law is enforced by a terrorist which is taken straight from their religious text. Even occupying an area is not going to solve anything. i.e, we were in Iraq for over a decade and there was still constant fighting and unrest. The only way we win this fight is to either go into a full out war with everyone, including the innocent and completely demolish the countries that ISIS is held up in (which is a nice handful of countries) or we step back and admit that we created a monster by invading Iraq, wipe our hands and walk away from the situation.

To effectively fight ISIS, and fighters of their type, we must look at how the greatest superheroes of all time, the Allied Forces in WW2 fought and won the war. They used the Geneva Convention treaties as it suited them, to great effect. Our leaders of the "Greatest Generation" had no problem leveling whole cities of every living thing such as Tokyo, Dresden and Hiroshima. Anyone not in uniform suspected of being a paritsan or enemy agent could be shot on the spot without trial. You see, the Allies were perfect and right in everything they did during WW2 because not one of the millions of Allied soldiers has ever been convicted of war crimes againt their enemies.

Based upon this gold standard of conducting war, it should be of little problem to attack and destroy the scrawny bands of Islamic State fighters.

Certainly, cities like Fallujah in 2003 should have leveled to the ground, as almost all the civilians had left and only the hardcore fighters remained.

The first idea winning the current war with ISIS is to destroy their primary bases for recruitment and propaganda---their Sunni IS mosques. All mosques, regardless of their cultural or historic value should be leveled to the ground if they are used to further the IS cause. Leaflets should be dropped 30 minutes in advance of these IS command and control centers being reduced to rubble.

All IS fighters, male, female or teens, who are not in uniform or caught fighting or carrying or housing obvious instruments of war such as large machine guns, RPG's mortars or bombs should be executed on the spot.

And this will cause no further resentment on the part of the Muslims all over the world at all. Not even the part where you go out of your way to burn mosques. Do you think the very stones are evil? Or maybe there's not been enough destruction of that area's history by ISIS.

Naziism was an ideology that had proven itself hostile to the whole world. Germany and the German people had clearly shown themselves to be allies of the Nazis. If we're going to do what you say then we should re-occupy Germany and treat all Germans everywhere as potential Nazis while burning all the Great Lutheran Cathedrals.

Most people in ISIS are there out of fear. First they fear us and then they fear ISIS. We have to allay that fear as a first step in fighting ISIS and mass killings are not a good way to make people less fearful.

Islam has done far more damage over far more territory, affecting more people over vastly more time than Nazis. Radical Islamics are the lowest of the low.

Our super Allied Forces thought nothing of blasting Christian Churchs to their foundations, as they destryoed thousands of them in WW2 without a second thought. Ditto for Shinto Shrines in Japan.

Even Germany and Japan signed the Geneva Convention, so if these bad governments could do it, so could ISIS. Even Hamas has signed the treaty for crying out loud. Given your name, you obviously have a deep affection for the Soviet Union, and Commies don't have to be accountable for anything they do---so they didn't have to sign the Geneva Convention.

Unless ISIS signs the Geneva Convention and plays by the rules (since they aren't Commies and aren't exempt), then every single fighter should be considered a terrorist with no right to anything except a bullet or a bomb.

For all the crybaby Mulsims who would be angered by having mosques leveled---have any of them demanded that ISIS play by the rules?

Where were these fellas when George Bush was losing the war and ISIS was forming? I guess you don't get to be a general by opening your mouth at meetings.

The other lesson we learned from WWII (and the neocons forgot all about) is that we first made the other guy surrender and disarm at the expense of their populations. Instead, we got this "welcome us with flowers" and "democratization" nonsense.

Yeah, I've suggested the 'fort' and French Foreign Legion model.

i am just amazed that so many people are eager to resolve this problem with boots on the ground

... and with so little evidence that it has worked in the past or would work in the future

we are apparently going to occupy iraq, syria, afghanistan, yemen, and maybe a few countries in africaa as well.

    and for dessert
we will have a war with iran
... and we gotta go to ukraine also?.

ok lets have a presidential candidate propose this

the only way to WIN vs Islam is to nuke every Muslim city, destroy every Koran, mosque and minerette, kill all the Muslim males above the age of 5, and make all the survivors eat pork. If you don't take such drastic measures vs Islam, (history shows) they will prevail in the end, due to their ruthlessness.

First, I would work with Turkey, the Kurds, the Syrian government, and Iraq to close down any borders at which foreign fighters are entering to fight for IS. Pretty self explanatory why.

Second, I would work with all the Gulf states and Turkey to track down and arrest any government or private donors to IS. I would do this because a lot of the articles I read as to where IS gets their money, it's through these "donors," but little actual detail is provided. If any government refuses to cooperate, I would completely cut or freeze diplomatic ties.

Thirdly, I would cut all military aid to the rebels. The rebellion has been hijacked by extremism, and I would leave the secular divisions to rid themselves of the sectarian abomination that has infected them.

Fourth, I would work with all governments in the region to to help develop military operations to help defeat IS, al-Nusra, and other sectarian extremist groups allied with IS. This would be done under the condition that all Middle Eastern countries wishing to fight IS would be willing to settle their religious differences and form a united coalition against IS. As long as Middle Eastern countries are manipulating our support to forward their own interests our support is useless. Yes, this means Israel with Hezbollah, the Saudis with Iran, all united. I know it sounds crazy and unrealistic, but really, what other way will this region evolve other than to tolerate one another? Countries that seek to stay neutral can as long as they accept the second proposition, otherwise they will be treated as an indirect IS ally. If belligerent countries such as Israel and Saudi Arabia refuse to work together, all US aid is off and the Middle East can just fend for themselves.

The ISIS or ISIL or whatever they are calling themselves today....is comprised of only about 16,000 poorly trained crazies controlled by sme smart people.

They are hardly a viable fighting force.

Let the Middle Eastern Nations deal with them.

HELL....they could barely hold their own against a few Gangs from South Central!!!

I don't think the IS should be fought against with military actions because war only brings up more terrorists. the problem is that there's already so much safety controls that we can't really have any more. What do you think? MOD EDIT>>>RULE 15<<<

I don't care about their morale as long as they are dead. Hellfires do a GREAT job of that.

Find there banking sources dry those up. Have our allies promise not to purchase oil from any possible isis source. Beg for more positive muslim leaders in these countries to speak out and aggressively denounce isis. Not just five mins of TV time. Let these muslims leaders meet to have them exchange their ideas to halt the growing radical problem.
Stop drone striking innocent people. When a father that wasn't radical sees his son and young baby daughter killed by an Obama drone he is more willing to take up arms against us. He has nothing else to live for other than revenge.
Start listening to Intel from other countries unlike what Obama did for the Boston bomber.
    Here is just a few.

Provide logistical support to the Iraqi army. The NIA is better equipped and outnumbers Daesh 5:1. Their lack of experienced generals, coordination, and planning techniques make it very hard for the Iraqi army to pull off any major offensive without some severe logistical failures. Logistical failures are the very reason they lost so much ground in the first place. They had no way of establishing a line of defense, because the army was being swarmed and their inexperienced commanders lost control of the situation, despite having an advantage on every other front.

NATO and Eastern nations need to send more military advisors so they can finally take the last two major cities Daesh has left. Concentration of mass is crucial. Having more manpower and resources than your enemy wont make a difference in war if you do not know how to apply them properly.

There is only 16,000 of them and they are spread all over.

They are hardly the threat they are made out to be.

This is Politics pure and simple.

I happen to be in Iraq doing something else when they took that dam and were killing all those people on top of that mountain.

We took out quite a few and brought in a few for interogation.

They were FRUIT LOOPS....they were just a MOB....it is the people that created them that we need to kill.

If a mosque covers doesn't report known radicals that mosque should be closed and sold along with all its holdings.
These proceeds then given to the victims of the terror act. Muslims would be paying money to the people they hate.

Same as Al Qaida... the more they got attacked by the West the more support they get...

the Red Army Fraction, in Germany wrote "our aim is through terrorism to provoke an overreaction by the state"....

therefore ISIS beheaded Americans before Bombing... the US Attacks gives them legitmacy...

Saudi, jordan, egypt, and iraq should foot the bill to hire a mercenary force of 50 to 100k. The least we could do is agree to sell the weapons to arms them. It seems if isis can attract people who want to kill for free, they should have no problem attaining a sizeable force to fight isis, with the air support it should go very well.

You don't have any reason, except oil reasons, to mix yourself in Iraq or elsewhere. Nobody from Iraq came to American to change government. I don't have any right to visit amazon village where are some cannibals and to use guns to change their way of thinking and to justify my killing of them, I could make propaganda against them in my country. So, isis or not, it is decision of Iraqis what kind of society they will have. they can fight between themselves, who has more supporters, he will win and make new society. the same was in bourgeoisie revolutions in Europe from 16 to 19 century, banksters had bigger support in society and they overtook power from kings and church, some people surely didn't like it, but it was done. so, there is no reason for Americans to fight against anybody in Iraq, your soldiers should simply stay in America. by the way, just to say I am not Muslim, I am atheist, I don't go in the church/mosque, I am against any war for oil and consequently against making propaganda about Muslims or maybe some cannibals in Amazon who have village above some energy resources.
