It seems like the perfect employment scenario and beats the hell out of a mcjob.
    1. Anybody can do it. Even people with no car, uber will negotiate a deal with a car company and pay the bill right out of your earnings.
    2. Their business model allows the driver to keep the majority of the profits. Seriously, talked to several uber drivers and they get paid everything above $2 a ride.If you drove 30 miles an hour and it was split between 4 rides you'd make $22 an hour, subtracting ubers skim off the top and gas for a 20mpg sedan. Either way unless you're just turning down tons of customers you'll make between $15-$30 an hour.
    3. You can set your own hours, you literally have God mode control over your schedule, you don't even have to work if you don't feel like it for no reason, no penalty, minus not earning money.

This kind of employment is pretty much capitalists sharing capitalism with the "working" class. Sure, you don't get healthcare, but obamacare fixed that. Nobody gets turned down for insurance anymore and lots of people can get a subsidy. Workmans comp? It's called car insurance. If you have a car you have it anyways. Insurance will pay for damages, including lost wages, or you could sue the bastard for not driving carefully, assuming it's his fault.

If we could somehow create hundreds of enterprises with this sort of structure, I think it'd be a fix for our current mcjob economy. It's a situation of you really do get paid for what you work. You can bust ass at mcdonalds and still be treated like crap and paid crap wages, bust ass driving for uber and you make bank. Why are people against it?

They're against it because the private sector created it, using technology created by private individuals. If Uber was a new Government program, liberals would be its biggest fan.

Plus, Uber drivers work for themselves. Perhaps if they all created a union, liberals would support them.

First off, it's not necessarily a "liberal" thing to be against Uber or its business model, but there is no denying that it strips away many of the safety issues of that industry as clearly demonstrated by the latest viral video showing an Uber driver being attacked by a drunk patron.

As for your assertion that it offers an opportunity to make "bank" is highly overrated. I work with a guy who does this on the side and he barely makes ends meet, even while being signed up with both Uber and Lyft at the same time, which is why he is currently working with me as a temp in another industry altogether. Bottom line, Uber makes lots of promises, but falls short in many ways, which is why in CA there is a big push to make them compliant with current labor laws.

One Kos writer ranting against Uber doesn't equate to liberals hating it.

I'm a big fan of Uber. Haven't used it yet (I have my own car, but might try it next time I wanna go out to the bar) but there are some definite legal murkiness to it's existence.

I'm just getting this from drivers themselves. I've regularly taken uber and talked to people who drive for it. They're the ones who told me if you don't turn down a lot of rides you get good pay.

I think you've just spelled out exactly why liberals hate Uber - because it is the antithesis of liberalism; ie. self-determinism, industriousness, ambition, and independence from government largesse... IOW, it proves that individuals can succeed in a free market under capitalism thus disproving almost all liberal economic theories.

Sorry, I know you hate it when I agree with you.

Non sequitur: Taxi drivers have been murdered by passengers in every big city in this country.

Shouldn't the individual decide if it's right for him/her or not? Why do we need government to do that for us?

Your topic is flawed. You have no evidence to even suggest that liberals hate uber.

I'm sorry you are wrong. The article is the OPINION of one person, Dartagnan, who is using the example of Uber, for his economic rant about "venture capitalism", among other things. The author never states anything about liberals and Uber. Flawed argument. For the record, I don't read Kos but apparently you do. You might want to post there and see what the readers at Kos have to say.

I don't have a problem with Uber. I think there are valid criticisms of it, just like there tend to be valid criticisms of nearly anything, but I don't think that means it should be run out of business, or subjected to antiquated laws, etc.

It's like Tesla running afoul of laws prohibiting carmakers from owning auto dealerships. It's a protection racket for car dealers.

Or like AirBnB getting flak from lawmakers supported by the hotel lobby.

Such "sharing economy" ventures have their downsides, but they should be allowed to exist. The law needs to change more than the companies.

Well, to be fair, most people who self-identify as liberals aren't actually liberals. They're just neo-socialist authoritarians who appropriate that label because it sounds better than neo-socialist authoritarian.

As for which of these fake liberals hate Uber, you can start with many of the writers over at Salon, who regularly write hit-pieces about how allegedly horrible Uber is.

    Why Uber must be stopped
The sharing economy is a lie: Uber, Ayn Rand and the truth about tech and libertarians
The Uber-economy f**ks us all: How “permalancers” and “sharer” gigs gut the middle class
I quit: Miseries of an Uber driver

And then you can move on to fake liberals like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, both of whom are eager to drown Uber in regulations.

In economic address, Hillary Clinton calls out 'gig' economy
Bernie Sanders Says He Has "Serious Problems" With Uber Because It's "Unregulated"

And then there are the fake liberals on the local level all throughout America who have been doing everything in their power to strangle Uber in its crib.

In California, Uber Loses Another Round in Driver Debate
UBER REGULATION: US CITIES THAT HAVE SUCCESSFULLY STOOD UP TO UBER

So, in answer to your question, so-called "liberals" themselves have told people they hate Uber.

Libbies want to control everything. The liberal greenies where I live just shut down a local farmer's market because the folks selling the produce didn't comply with the new greenie 'organic' regulations.
