I remember those four because they were sunk at Midway. I don't remember the other two.

I will guess either the German or the Japanese submarine forces.

I will go with the German.

You're very good aren't you? The U-Boat section of the Kriegsmarine suffered the greatest casualty rate of all of the services during WWII. The death rate was 82%.

    Your turn.

I'm a big fan of the history of the Battle of Midway. That's why I knew about the four aircraft carriers under Nogumo at Midway. I couldn't remember the other two, but I remember there was elation at the sinking of the last carrier involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

    Thanks.

    82%. Geez...

Which mass produced tank started with a gun (in it's first models) less then half the size of the one it had in it's final variant?

That was why I remembered also- there was also that whole semi-rhyming thing- which is why I should have remembered Shokaku-Zukaiku also...

    I am guessing the Mathilda.

As I recall the Mathilda started of in the earliest versions as machine gun only- probably .303 caliber, which is what 7.95 mm? And I think the final version of the Mathilda was 40 mm?

Actually, I believe there was a Matilda 1 and a Matilda 2...the first only(?) came with a machine gun as it was (if I recall) strictly an infantry support tank.

I'll give you all a hint --- it was not an Allied tank.

I took a quick look, and I think the Mathilda counts, but clearly not the one you intended.

    Just running through my mind-
    Germans
    Pz1- machine gun only
    Pz2- 20 mm
Pz3- started off with 37mm ended with 50 mm
pz4- started off with short 75, ended with long 75.
So....doesn't seem like any of these.

There is the wierd Pz38...but I don't think that upgunned.

That leaves Italian tanks or Japanese...and I don't know them as well.

Actually, what I typed about Matilda is true.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matilda_II

It's the Panzer Mark III (though there may be others I am not aware of).

It started with a 37mm (as you say) but ended with a 75mm short gun in the 'N' model.

Infantry Tank Mark II Matilda II[5]
First production model[33] armed with a Vickers machine gun.[5]
Infantry Tank Mark II.A. Matilda II Mk II[5][33]
Vickers machine gun replaced by Besa machine gun. The "A" denoted a change in armament.[5]

I don't claim to be an expert on the Matilda, but they are calling these two versions Mk2.

Anyway- I don't know that I ever knew of the "N" model- if I did I certainly had forgotten it. Especially interesting that it was used with HEAT rounds.

What was the name of the only South American country to join the Allies in WW2, and the name of the forces that saw combat on the ground.?

Yes, but was it mass produced, as I stipulated earlier?

Or was it just a few pre-production models?

I do not know...but I highly doubt more then a few dozen Matilda 2's armed with only a mg were built.
