The meaning of words change over time. The meanings of the words liberal and conservative have historical significance and current understanding.

The America left exists in the here and now because we say so. We define our opponents. Just as our opponents define us as they deem appropriate.

This all begs the question. Which is it to be? Liberty or equality. Everyone can define liberty and equality as they see fit. And everyone can form a coalition with those of compatible views.

We are now coalescing into two camps. One side must inevitably win, and the ideas of the other must inexorably be swept away.

Well I can tell you that the modern democratic party is not "liberal" in any sense of the word. As a classic liberal and supporter of individual freedom, I align more with the republicans. Not that I like them as I despise neocons, but that tells you how far "liberals" are from "liberty."

I know what you mean. I was a Democrat for half of my life. Then I tried the Republicans. Now I simply consider myself to be a conservative. I am entitled to define the meaning of the term "conservative" for myself. :)

    1. - I feel that upholding and defending laws is not as noble as the drafting of new legislation, or a better defense of law (press release, etc) in the public arena which ''constitutional'' conservatives seem to fail at. They are admirable in their efforts, certainly, to fight corruption.

    2. - Obama is a semi-fascist, I agree, and I do hope that a better candidate challenges him in the Democratic primary. He has been a ''Change'' of masks, not policy.

    3. - Politicians could be held accountable through public referendums and by gaining the constitutional right to vote on Congressional measures. Usonia would be a better placec if we modeled ourselves on the Swiss Confederacy, and gave ''Average'' Joe more power over his civil servants.

    4. - I don't know many people who have claimed the tenets of Liberalism are ''new''. The petite-welfare state has not failed, the major-welfare state has not failed, the non-welfare state has not failed, and so on. When a system is stable it doesn't fail. China is stable. Russia is stable. Germany is stable. Do you notice a trend? economic opinion tends toward overwhelming concert between politikeers in each country, only on social issues do they disagree. I have already named things that do work on this thread, if you care to look backward. Many of those listed are extant, and are working today in various countries.

    5. Yes, I want to live in a perfect world, you want to live in a perfect world, yet neither of us claims to live in a perfect world. Placing limits on those who recieve governmental assistance would do wonders in this country, and I support it fully. I support workfare strongly, and think that civil service out to be instated to give people a non-military alternative to serving their country in various roles, something that would occupy the time of many otherwise misguided young people.

    6. You wrote well ''government is a necessary evil,''. However, when watched closely, and managed properly through direct democracy, it can be a lovely marble fountain, not a aluminium spicket.

    7. I still do not know where you keep getting this idea that ''Europe is broke, Europe is broke.'' Europe is a money-making powerhouse, it is going through cyclical tormoil since the EU affair began. It will pass once Europe is re-organized into a better, more efficient system.

    8. The Kremlin is a perennial ogre people drag out; in charge of a declining state, and in no way comparable to Main Street Brussels.

Europe is experiencing cyclical turmoil like people experience cyclical Pancreatic Cancer.

And I have no false hopes of living in a 'perfect world.' I learned long ago to deal with life's lumps and boils, and odors. As you cross the street you can wish all you want that the speeding truck won't hit you in another nanosecond. I just don't believe the crosswalk is safe because the sign says "WALK"! I look for myself.

What liberal told you they didn't want freedom? Certainly not me or any other actual liberals. A communist maybe. But not a liberal in the true sense of the word.

Same here, I find it amusing that righties claim that liberals want to destroy freedom.

Yet, aside from maybe guns, they can't cite any freedoms that the evil liberals want to destroy.

You forgot to mention that they don't want to pay for their perfect world either. You can give up your freedom and your money for their perfect world.
