A Brit joins the March of the Dead.

"It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Sapper Connor Ray, from 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), died in hospital in Birmingham on 18 April 2012 from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.

On 11 April 2012, Sapper Ray was involved in a search and clearance operation in the Nad 'Ali district of central Helmand near to Checkpoint Kahmanan. The aim of the mission was to clear a compound previously used by insurgents, allowing the local population to safely return to the area.

During this operation Sapper Ray was seriously injured in an IED strike. He received immediate medical attention before being taken to the Camp Bastion Role 3 Hospital and was later evacuated to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Sapper Connor Ray, aged 21, from Newport, started his military career in January 2008 at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. He joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in June 2009 and qualified as a Building and Structural Finisher upon completion of his trade training at Chatham.

He joined 49 Field Squadron (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), in April 2010, where he trained as an Advanced Searcher. He was kept busy in his specialist role, which included providing support for a number of high profile events. During his time in Afghanistan, Sapper Ray and his team successfully undertook a number of high risk searches which undoubtedly saved numerous British and Afghan lives..."

Four more Americans died in Afghanistan yesterday. Two of them died in separate improvised explosive device incidents.

The other two died from non-combat related causes. What is a "non-combat" related cause? From what I can gather the phrase means death resulting from accident, disease, suicide or drug overdose.

Accidents and disease are a fact of life. But it takes hopelessness for a man or woman to commit suicide or to overdose himself or herself.

When these soldiers are identified I will attach the link.

Two Americans were killed by one of their Afghan allies today as they presented him with a new weapon. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Aug. 17, 2012) – Two U.S. Forces-Afghanistan service members died this morning as a result of an insider threat attack in Farah province, Afghanistan today. A member of the Afghan Local Police turned his weapon against two USFOR-A service members. The attacker was shot and killed.

Officials are investigating the incident to determine the facts and as more information becomes available it will be released as appropriate.

It is USFOR-A policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the U.S. Department of Defense.

He died on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan:

WINDSOR - An Army sergeant serving his third tour of Afghanistan was killed over the weekend, rocking his hometown. The family of Christopher Birdwell, 25, was notified of his death by Army officials late Sunday night, and the word began spreading through the town and across Facebook on Monday.
"Everybody loved him," said his brother, Dustin, 23. "He was a really fun guy to be around.
Birdwell joined the Army when he was 18, a few months after graduating from Windsor High School, and he re-enlisted when his initial contract was up. Dustin Birdwell said his brother took great pride in being a leader of his fellow soldiers.
According to Army records, Chris Birdwell made sergeant in February 2011, and his brother said he found a second family within the ranks.
"He was loved by his brotherhood," Dustin Birdwell said.
He said many of the men who served with his brother called or messaged him on Monday to share memories and condolences.
John Sears, who attends the same Windsor Church of Christ as the Birdwell family, said Chris Birdwell's repeated tours of duty in the "backyard of nowhere" brought him closer to the family he didn't get to see very often.

"A NATO helicopter crashed today in Eastern Afghanistan, killing two U.S. troops, the third time in 10 days that a coalition helicopter has come down.
