I have no "source", but just had to share the news my kids brought home with them yesterday, so I thought I'd post here. This year, the public school lunchroom was set to new standards. No more butter, salt, dressing, cheese, smaller portions, etc....all a result of the First Lady's cause for healthier kids. Sounds good, huh? I don't think many can argue against the position that kids SHOULD eat healthier, and healthier is always a good thing. But, should it be MANDATED by federal government? Is it wise to do so? This year's standards are so strict, that kids in my district are bringing their lunches to school in masses. Okay, I thought...free country, right? Well, now comes the news I got yesterday: There are so many fewer kids getting lunches, that now they are seriously considering letting some lunch staff go. Firing. End of jobs. I personally didn't see that one coming. So, while liberal ideas can appear to have all good intentions, their micro-managing from far reaching areas can have, and are likely to have mucked up results. Kids are now back to eating what they choose (to pack instead of from the lunch line), and lunch staff are likely out of jobs. Nicely done, Michelle!
I'm sure the lunch staff can go work for the local grocer who is probably hiring due to more people buying school lunch stuff to send their kids to school with.
Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of it's stated intent. I heard a while back that a lot of this "healthy" food ends up in the trash. Have you had enough government yet?
Actually, I'm of a slightly different opinion. I don't think schools should be in the lunch business at all. Parents should feed kids. Pretty simple concept. While it's sad they're letting people go, I submit to you parents feeding their kids, especially to escape the iron fist of the federal government, is a good thing. Let the chips fall where they may.
It's sad to think about, but that's the only meal some kids get. Yes, this means their parents are complete and utter (*)(*)(*)(*), but I don't want to take it out on the kids. As for the mandate... you're still free to bring your lunch, when that changes I'll get outraged, but until then it's a public school and to expect anything other than mandates and guidelines would be a little silly.
Unsubstantiated anecdotal story with specious link to the First Lady without any verifiable context? Yeah, that's TOTALLY credible. "The First Lady is trying make mah kid skinny! That (*)(*)(*)(*)ing (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)! I'm going to send him to school with a bag o' deep-fried Twinkies! That'll show her!"
Well...we already know what the "solution" to all that is....banning home brought lunches The collectivists have already begun; http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/04/11/chicago-elementary-school-bans-lunches-brought-home/
Queue the debunked story about how Michelle Obama's food police held a little girl at gunpoint and forced her to eat some chicken nuggets while throwing away a turkey sandwich.
If I was a parent (and I am), I'd be happy that my kids weren't being fed cheap, high-carb, fried crap by the school district, even if the fry cook lost his job. But, to each his own.
Yes...the Chicago Tribune...that bastion of right wing propaganda....has made up another story http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...nch-restrictions-041120110410,0,4567867.story [h=2]"To encourage healthful eating, Chicago school doesn't allow kids to bring lunches or certain snacks from home — and some parents, and many students, aren't fans of the policy"[/h]
Such a stupid and worthless program by Michelle Obama. even Olympian Gabby Douglas owned her on the View when she said she actually LIKES junk food right in front of her. heck, when I was in highschool most of us had cars already so we left the campus for lunch and ate whatever. Healthy eating can't be legislated into a person's life. that's a personal decision all day long.
It's a personal decision, but I'd bet you wouldn't decide on a restaurant that didn't have minimum standards. Where all you could get was french fries and apple pie. And Gabby Douglas can eat anything she wants because she burns 6000 calories a day. She's not a good example for our thumb flickers.
Everywhere you go should have minimum standards. even the gas station with the messy restrooms got standards. It's Michelle's stupid agenda to control people's decisions that's a waste of time and effort here. starting with the schools. what's next? the menu at the job cafeteria for Parents? Monitoring what the grown ups eat? HUH?!!!! Gabby Douglas is the PERFECT example of how active young kids should be. PERFECT EXAMPLE
For encouraging kids to load up on junk food??? You gotta be kidding. I agree that she is a great young kid.
As long as they can get by the Health Department, school cafeterias can serve all the hot dogs and pizza they want. Ketchup is a vegetable remember.
Gabby didn't encourage other kids to eat it. she just said SHE likes it. Michelle hasn't run a marathon or done anything athletic to show she's even serious about her own program. and I'm not talking about puttin on sneakers and a warm up for the papparazzi either.
$540.00 ones.... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/29/michelle-obama-wears-silv_n_193138.html [h=2][/h]
So you are complaining about government jobs being eliminated? Or that the government is telling government enterprises that the food provided by government enterprises needs to meet certain standards? You do realize that the federal government has been telling schools for years what lunches must consist of?
Are you saying the First Lady has no ties to policy on school lunches? I put this thread in the Opinions section because the job loss thing hasn't happened yet. So far, there is just talk, and said so in my post. I don't need a source. Nice dodge!!
You're missing the point. The point is, that even good intentioned government meddling doesn't fix the problem, and even leaves things worse.
AND.... How ironic is it that this high and mighty Michelle Obama can fight against obesity in kids and try to control everybody's lives on what they should eat, BUT the broad can't seem to find her way on TV to rally against the cancerous dangers of smoking that her deadbeat husband does every 30 minutes in nicotine fits?? Where's the campaign against that????? CAN ANYBODY ANSWER THAT?
"Government meddling" in a Public School.... The entire school is "meddling", the premise is really silly.
I'm complaining about Michelle Obama going completely overboard, and creating a whole new set of problems. Federal government needs to stop micro-managing things like this. There just isn't any balance anymore...or room for common sense.
Not when the Feds are making every little decision that a LOCAL boards should oversee. If I have a problem with it, I can't take it to my local school board, or call up any of the memebers. Regardless, Michelle's involvement may kill jobs. Just sayin'...
