Translation: Because they know that the majority of voters would send the homos back to their civil unions where they belong. This isn't about gay marriage; the NJ gays already have their civil unions. This is a bill to satisfy the gays' wishes to have their civil unions being called "marriages", simple as that.

Indeed, I am for the one that ensures equal protection and application to all, and against the one that denies it.

    You are 100% correct.

I'm all for honoring the will of the people if they vote to approve it just liek the will of the people in Cali should be respected

the OP took liberties mentioning constitutionality

the Constitution does not reference how one has sex as being a reason to create special rules. Any man can marry any woman they wish and vice versa. it does not matter with whom or how they have sex, they are not denied the ability to marry the opposite sex

Sometimes, the will of the people is wrong.

It's pretty obvious that ending segregation would have taken much longer if it had been put to statewide referendums, for example.

Which is odd, because the Constitution does not say that either.

Which makes any same-sex law unconstitutional then, right? If it is not in the Constitution, then it is not a right, no?

thank God for the GOP to get civil rights passed. But, we're talking color of skin vs what someone claims they do in their bedroom

    not a valid comparison whatsoever

The GOP used to be more like the Libertarian party. That was before they were able to gain the Solid South and evangelicals in general.

It is a valid comparison just as much as the protections afforded to religion are.

    not at all

separation of church and state is nothing similar to whether john diddles joan or john diddles jim

you keep reaching but it's nothing more than how one has sex.

I was referring to his statement that the will of the people is always right.

It's hard to predict what he's going to do. I'm sure even he can't decide. That's obviously why he tried to push this for a vote from the people of NJ; he doesn't want to be responsible for the final decision, and can you blame him? Vetoing the bill may cost him a second term as governor. Signing the bill may cost him the presidency in 2016.

But he told the nation he was staying out of the 2012 presidential campaign partly because he wanted to continue his work here for the people of NJ. Time now to see where his loyalties truly lie.

Doesnt make it a religious institution. It means that the ceremony is performed mostly by preists. If it was a religious institution only, laws would not recognize it, taxes would not adjust to it, benefits would not be tied to it, etc, etc, etc...If we were talking about baptism I would agree.
Secondly if you want to use the religious institution angle then wouldnt gay marriage be recognized legally if the couple could find a church that would marry them? Or are you saying that you want to tell churches how to practice their religion?

Funny how you and the rest of the liberals supported 3 judges in California deciding for a state against the will of the people but when the actual governor of a state decides the same issue against the legislators on the opposite side you condemn him.

    What a shocker.

Hopefully New Jersey will be the eighth state to legalize same sex marriage.

    Here's to equality, cheers.
