How much money are we talking about here has that been determined yet? Like exact dollar amounts per black person living in America. Or are we talking about doing like 40 acres and a Lexus now or something?

I'm not asking about anybody of any color. I'm asking about black people. Why do they commit more crimes (as you said)? Or why are there disproportionately more black people in prisons?

You already said you don't know. And this is why you can't see the relation between this and reparations. You need to find out before taking any stance on the subject of reparations. Most definitely not take a position (for or against, if you want) on the matter until you understand it.

I'm not talking about "anyone of any color". I'm talking about black people. And my question is why are there more black people in prison than white people? Or, if you prefer: why do more black people commit more crimes than white people? Which you stated as a fact (I don't know if that's true or not).

You stated that you don't know. But you won't understand reparations until you answer either one of those questions. You shouldn't take a position (for or against) until you understand the issue. And those questions are vital. @Moolk came very close to answering the question correctly, when he started to mention culture. But then he suddenly bowed out. Maybe he didn't know what "culture" means, or maybe he realized he wasn't going to like his own conclusion. We will never know because he then just wandered off on a strawman. Hopefully you will put into it more effort than he did. As would anybody who wants to take positions, not because somebody told them what to opine, but because they understand the issue.

I answered it correctly, and pointed out how the narrative you were attempting to create was wrong. You didn’t like the answer so you pretend it never happened. I never addressed a strawman, you misrepresent what happened because ironically it is you who wasn’t liking the conclusion. Regardless, from an objective perspective reparations are unjust, discriminatory, ineffective, and not justified. Culture is solved from within. Blaming the current culture that is so prevalent in the black community on discrimination is fallacious, considering they are not unique in having endured discrimination yet are unique in crime stats.

As easily as I can, you, too, can pore through the volumes of published data on the different varieties of crime in America, and see it broken out by race, ethnicity, etc. You pride yourself on your 'research' prowess, so it ought to be second-nature for you....

You're dancing, Golem. You pivot between a position of advocating "reparations-because-of-prison-sentences", and, the more commonly Leftist-advocated, "reparations-because-of-slavery" meme. By planting both your 'feet' in both arguments, you lose traction in both.

For the last time, I'm not a 'criminologist', but I can READ and cross-check data. Blacks do commit more crimes on a per capita basis, and, thus, all other factors taken into account, it is not shocking that they make up a larger percentage of the prison population. And even though there are some irregularities in sentencing, it is no basis upon which to make a argument for nation-wide "reparations"....

The only thing left is the 156 year-old 'slavery' angle, but it quickly becomes confused as critics ask simple questions of the advocates, like, "Who should get money?", "How much money?", "Would it be necessary to prove that an ancestor was a slave in America?", "Would it be necessary to prove authentic Black-African ancestry's bloodlines, or would an equal disbursement be given to mulatto populations...?"

All in all, Golem, when you mash all he air bubbles out of it, "reparations" as a proposition in the United States is a simple, crass MONEY-GRAB! The only people it has 'traction' with are, of course, Blacks, and, radical-Leftists who want to leverage Black votes.

As they say down South -- "That dog don't hunt...." But do have a lovely Sunday afternoon. :dog:

I'm not sure what sort of calculus you need to employ to figure out how much reparations my English ancestors need to pay to my scottish ancestors, my Spanish ancestors need to pay to my Taino and African ancestors, and my American ancestors need to pay to my Puerto Rican ancestors.

I'm mean, have you ever seen west side story? It's brutal.

And now that initial "paltry 21 word reply" has dwindled even further, to an emaciated 12 word reply. It's both depressing and disappointing to see how poorly the radical-Left defends its 'advocacy' positions when challenged....

Hey, the Nazis had a lot of trouble with it, too, so they simply made up for their deficiencies by suggesting that everyone read "Mein Kampf"....

I wish you luck with that! I'm still trying to concoct some break-through strategy to get the Italian Government to pay ME reparations because the Roman Empire took my German ancestors as slaves a while back!

But, maybe I should open a 'two-pronged' attack on the Italians by trying to find a way to convince everyone that German criminals in Italy are sentenced unfairly to longer crimes than Italian criminals...? Hey, it couldn't hurt! Whatever WORKS... right...? 8)

Did you ever see Richard Gere's performance in the movie, "Chicago", in his amazing role as attorney "Billy Flynn"?

I don't like to waste my time debating people who are not on my level. You obviously don't know as much as I do about the history of White Supremacy as it relates to criminal justice. And since you don't know, it would be frustrating to debate you.

Pollycy, when you have time please Google: Gary Webb/crack cocaine/Dark Alliance.
This is an interesting story about how crack cocaine was introduced into poor Black neighborhoods in the early 1980s. If you have any doubts whether or not Blacks are targeted by the government/police, this story should clear it up for you.

You believe in white supremacy. You believe that whites are supreme! They can do anything they want to blacks and blacks are powerless to stop it because whites are superior. That is at the heart of everything you believe when it comes to race.

You are so determined to depict blacks as victims you are willing to hold those views and spew them every time you post.

You didn't answer. If you had an answer you would have repeated it here.

What other ethnic groups have we enslaved. Or enacted Jim Crowe legislation against?

    "Reparations-because-of-prison-sentences"????

No idea what you're talking about. I have advocated no such thing.

I don't know what "irregularities" you're talking about. The question is WHY do you think it is that "blacks commit more crimes on a per capita basis?

    What "money"????

I say again: don't lock yourself into a position about an issue before you understand what the issue is. And I must say, with all due respect, that I don't think you are understanding this one.

What type of "reparations" are we talking about then if its not direct monetary compensation?

We treated the East Asian Chinese even worse than slaves. A slave was at least fed, clothed, sheltered, and provided with medical care, because the slave represented an investment!

Chinese laborers were mostly just worked to death, often cheated out of their pathetic pay, and provided with nothing.

Oh, and "Jim Crow" laws? There was plenty of fanciful legislation thrown together, especially in the American West, to prevent East Asians from becoming citizens, voting, or even living in the same city limits as Whites.

Funny, though.... I don't hear any Chinese-American descendants bitching about how somebody should give any of THEM "reparations".

Reparations are in the form, for example, of scholarships to underprivileged black kids, an opportunity to buy a house for pretty much the same amount of money they are paying to rent, better schools in black neighborhoods, ... It could also include some cash payments for, for example, kids while they are obtaining a college degree and making progress in their studies, to help with living expenses. But the basic idea of reparations is not to simply hand out checks so white people can sleep better at night. It's to break the poverty cycle that they have been in for centuries. In which black people can't study and make their lives better, because they have to start working early, because they don't have money to support their family, because they can't study and make their lives better.

Is what you described the form of reparations that folks are talking about in the media and Congress or are they talking about direct monetary compensation? Genuinely asking because I don't know. And is this form of reparations what much of the black community is talking about as well? I ask that because out of all the black folks I've ever spoken to about reparations they are talking about direct paychecks when they say reparations and I've spoken to quite a few...

If the former is what Congress is discussing then they may want to check with the black community as a whole to see if that would be "acceptable" because I don't think they are on the same page regarding what "reparations" means.

Not sure why poster doesn't know why more blacks than whites in prison - this should be common knowledge .. but - not sure what this has to do with reparations for slavery - these seem two separate issues .. which of course are related ... but to what degree .. eahhh .

There are systemic issues as to why the prison population is so high - outside of the reparations issue. The population wasn't near as high 40 or so years ago .. prior to the "Drug War" - hint hint.

and obviously - in such a war - the "Lower Classes" are going to get disproportionately represented- in particular the lower classes of non -white lineage and pedigree ..

So this has something to do with said reparations .. but it is in with a host of stuff that turns into an unmanageable mountain very quickly .. which turns us away from solving the systemic issues that led to the problem.

Change bad law is step 1 - we need to be having a different relationship between people and the cops .. like it was before the Drug war.

Everything after that is gravy .. .

I did answer, I answered it directly and you simply didnt like how it dismantles your intended narrative.

We have discriminated against in our history every ethnicity. In the present day we discriminate against white people.

Every ethnicity has dealt with it, and still do. Hell, Asians were put in camps not all that long ago and they are doing great.

Discrimination isn’t whats holding bck the black community, present day nor historic.

And again, reparations are not effective at fixing the issues they face. That will take a cultural change from within.

Reparations are inherently discriminatory and ineffective.
