Don't kid yourself. France is not the only country or the first country to find US culture objectionable.

The Soviet Union was "fairly far left" and they certainly found the American culture to be toxic.

France expects immigrants to adapt to adapt to France. In the US we expect to have our society adapt to the immigrants.

Cancel culture is hitting hard, but will disappear eventually. Though i think it may take the generation of middle schoolers and below to grow up in it to rebel as all kids do and undo what our generation of idiots has created.

I’d argue even many democrats see it as an issue, but unfortunately are more convinced that white supremacy and racism and what not (which are such nonissues these days) are much larger issues so they largely ignore it.

Eventually that will change to I predict.

For once, the French ain't wrong!

Sure the French are far left compared to the US, but it's that old time class struggle marxism. The woke, race uber alles ideas are new to them, and of course are threatening.

Bwahahahahaha... the French started this Cultural Marxism and now are crying about it. Yes, the Left woke crowd is destructive and without redeeming qualities... but we told you that long ago. Politics of division only end one way and it's not good.

Don't know why you would bring up Donald Trump in this thread which has nothing to do with him. If you were wanting to intentionally derail this thread, this was a poor and idiotic attempt.

I think the left around the world is very consistent. What we have going on now in the West is a lite version of Mao's cultural revolution.

    @Bearack .

You did not post a link, but I'm guessing you are using the same NY Times article as SteveN's thread on this same topic, also in the CURRENT EVENTS Forum.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/09/world/europe/france-threat-american-universities.html

The case laid out is that the French don't want to face or even discuss issues of race, despite their own colonial past, which included slaves, and the racism in government & society, which the status quo tries to ignore & deny exists.

"Mr. Taguieff said in an email that researchers of race, Islamophobia and post-colonialism were motivated by a 'hatred of the West, as a white civilization.’--"

    --
boy, that sounds familiar; where have I heard that before?" But wait, the familiarity increases--

“The common agenda of these enemies of European civilization can be summed up in three words: decolonize, demasculate, de-Europeanize,’’ Mr. Taguieff said. 'Straight white male — that’s the culprit to condemn and the enemy to eliminate.' "

So they legitimize their calling those with new perspectives, with whom they disagree, "enemies of European civilization," by claiming that they, themselves, the "straight white male, " is being treated as an, "enemy to eliminate;" the poor, victimized, straight, white male.

This is an echo of what began here a long time ago. It is especially unwelcome now, though, because of the French government's failings in dealing with Covid-19. Macron is looking for allies on the Conservative Right.

As far as Academia, there is always a resistance to new ways of thought; plus, no matter what your occupation, racism lives among your peers. As does, in paternalistic French society, misogyny & xenophobia.

The upshot of all the protests has not been a willingness to re-evaluate or reform, but only to scapegoat American universities (instead of Antifa) and fight back against the insecurity of change.

"Behind the attacks on American universities — led by aging white male intellectuals — lie the tensions in a society where power appears to be up for grabs, said Éric Fassin, a sociologist who was one of the first scholars to focus on race and racism in France, about 15 years ago.

"Back then, scholars on race tended to be white men like himself, he said. He said he has often been called a TRAITOR and faced THREATS, most recently from a RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST who was given a four-month suspended prison sentence for threatening to decapitate him.

"But the emergence of young intellectuals — some Black or Muslim — has fueled the assault on what Mr. Fassin calls the 'American boogeyman.’ "

At one time long, long ago, France actually had their act together.

    From the Baltimore Afro-American Jan. 4, 1902...

This isn't something "France" is saying, it's something a small number of people in France are saying. Other people in France disagree. If you scroll all the way to the end of the Daily Mail (ugh) article you linked, you'll see some very brief counter points, so they can claim to be balanced while hoping nobody will bother reading that far and spoil the rage and hatred they're hoping to stir up.

Rage and hatred? Who are the blokes that are canceling others? The vitriol from the cancel culture is coming from one side and one side alone. Even many on the left (now that they are also getting canceled) are going "maybe we are taking this a bit to far".

That was in relation to the tabloid media. They want to get readers emotional because emotional people are more likely to click on more links to other stories or adverts.

I don't like the whole left/right dichotomy but this story is about French people deemed to be on the right complaining. Reality is more complex than any of the blinkered political partisans are willing or able to understand though, regardless of which country they're in.

Thanks for explaining. I didn't realize it could be done that way (I'm not very computer/internet-saavy).
