They may not be owners or controllers of the course, but as members they will have rights that will be set out in the membership rules.

There are always two sides to every story, but golf course calling the police over slow play - after three of the players have already left the group - sounds really strange.

The police walked away without taking any action. Let's also keep that fact in mind.

I do also play at a public course, it's good in its own way. I smoke cigarettes there and drink Victoria Bitter, a working class beer.

Ever seen Caddyshack? 1979 if I remember correctly, with Bill Murray and the perfectly cast Rodney Dangerfield. That's my complete view of golf in hour and a half. I try to split the difference between Murray, Dangerfield, and Chevy Chase's characters.

I envy your enthusiasm. Seems that all that I see are the bad side of things of late.

Maybe I should get out and play some golf.

They are still allowing the group behind to start hole 3 straight away so they effectively did let them play through. They would not have known that they would have to queue at hole 4 until they got to the tee of hole 4.

They finished the first nine holes in an hour and 45 minutes. The course rules state that the total time allowed is 4 hours 15 minutes hence they finished the first nine holes in less than half the maximum required time. Only two of them then completed the course. And so what if the schedule was one hour behind - that is not their fault. They also had to wait the extra hour.

Plus it did not indicate that they were playing slow. They were slowed down by the person who came to complain at them during the second hole

Ok...think we are in agreement here... they took steps to keep play behind them moving as much as possible..

All good... but technically, "playing through" means passing in front of a slower group...I get all semantical sometimes..

Interesting. Perhaps this was just a big misunderstanding. (Including the assumption that race had anything to do with it.)

If they skipped that hole it means it was open in front of them which means they were not keeping pace.

They skippedat least one hole and then they took too long at the turn.

What "rights" did they have that you are talking about. And yes I bet they got belligerent about nonexistant "rights" and THAT is why the police were called not about this stupid nonsense to make them play faster.

Which they said was caused by the ongoing discussion of their "slow play" on the 2nd hole... can't play golf fast when you are are arguing with the course owner about why you aren't playing golf faster...

When they carted directly to the 4th tee and the group in front of them hadn't teed off yet, they were not way out of position... also, the 3rd hole is a par 3....

When I first read the original OP, I assumed it was a bunch of beginners or part timers... these women are part of a long term golf group and long terms members of the club. They get the benefit of the doubt (on the slow play claim) in my book, based on their experience (not talent).

The primary bad decision is letting them go out as a 5-some. While I highly doubt it will cause slow play as early as the 2nd hole, that could cause a problem later in the day.

I don't know that that conversation was that long, the fact remains the course was open before them. And the totally skipped the third hole and #2 is a long par 4 and #3 a par 4. And then they were taking too long at the turn which is a no-no on a backed up course, you get through your round so they can get the carts back and cleaned up for the next players.

And being a long term member doesn't necessarily mean you shoot under 100.

I don't believe this would have been an issue if they were keeping up with the group in front of them. I doubt the marshal would have been called otherwise.

See my post #161.... you got the wrong grand view golf course....

Shooting over 100 doesn't mean you are slow either...

Neither of us was there.... The club pro said they were in position on the 2nd hole...

Whatever rights they bought by joining the club.
At my club I have the right to have lunch in the dining room. Unless you are a member or a guest of a member, you do not.

If there was only two people in the group ahead of them it would be near impossible to keep up with them however we do know that they did catch up with them by skipping hole 3

I think more facts are needed for sure, hard to tell which side was in the wrong without more information

agree, wonder if other customers were waiting in line to start the holes (I never played golf, so not sure how that works), but your right, it's a private club, so they could warn them then refund there membership dues and revoke membership if they choose, most people at that point would comply, speed it up

If they skipped a hole, it means they were enabling others waiting behind them to get faster access to a hole. This is an alternative to allowing others to play through, meant to achieve the same result.

And if you violate a rule I bet they can ask you to leave. I can join the "sandwich club" at the local sandwich shop, that doesn't get me ownership. I belong to the country club in my neighborhood including the golf course and pools and stables and tennis courts. if I violate a rule at anyone I can be asked to leave and if I refuse and especially if I start raising mg voice they might call to local police to come and handle it.

This should put things to rest:
