22 cases of paralysis from Polio has been reported this month in Syria.
This country is going back in time....
wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has been isolated from ten of the cases.
Estimated immunization rates in the Syrian Arab Republic declined from 91 percent in 2010 to 68 percent in 2012.

Given the current situation in Syria, the number of refugees in the region and subnational immunity gaps in key areas, the risk of further international spread of wild poliovirus type 1 across the region is considered to be high...

Yes I think it could spread.

KSA has been polio free since 1995.. immunization has been mandatory since 1979.

Syria's compliance level has fallen during this civil war.

Estimated immunization rates in the Syrian Arab Republic declined from 91 percent in 2010 to 68 percent in 2012.

You know Saudi has all those pilgrims..

The Health Ministry has instructed incoming pilgrims, through the Kingdom's missions abroad, to produce vaccination certificates against yellow fever, meningitis, polio and influenza depending on their countries of origin.

    http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/2013/10/saudi-arabia-thousands-given-polio-vaccine.html

If you show up without your shotcard.. they vaccinate you at port of entry.... They vaccinate thousands.

The fight to wipe out polio...

Polio vaccine drive is race against time
April 12, 2014 ~ The aim is to ensure Lebanon does not become the third country in the region after Syria and Iraq to have confirmed cases of polio, ending a more than decadelong absence of the highly infectious paralyzing disease.

Even as a reverend that was born in the bible belt USA I am all for fully funding applied science and pure R&D projects. Here in the USA at my mission I see a few people in their 50’s and 60’s with deformities caused by the polio virus! All Virus has the ability to mutate as does bacteria which causes a plethora of infection in humans and our animals. So even if we think we have wiped out a virus or bacteria they can and have remerged to infect again. War and other natural disasters such as the Syrian and various middle east conflicts etc will give virulent agents a toehold to again cause pain and death, especially in areas where the governments and the general population can not afford vaccines and medical care. Its another reason I feel that isolation of the western hemisphere is a much better long term plan than the one world solution now being pushed by nearly all G-3 nations.

Only 74 cases of polio reported worldwide in 2015...

New, Noninfectious Vaccine Could Help Eliminate Polio
April 03, 2016 - With only 74 cases of polio reported worldwide in 2015, the disease is well on its way to eradication. But re-emergence through accidental release from a bio-containment factory is a small but real risk.

All the more reason to fully vet anyone coming from that entire region.

This is sensationalism. We never "eradicated" the disease. Your error is in assuming polio exists only where there are cases. This is not correct. It exists in the US, but everyone here is vaccinated. Once in awhile you'll hear of someone contracting it. Thank an invisible man that it doesn't mutate.

To concern yourself with polio from refugees I think is an ignorant stance - not derogatory. Read up on it and learn that doesn't mean an outbreak happens.

The outbreaks are happening because of jihadists spreading the disease in all the countries they move around to fight in.

Typical minimization of problem brought by the same folks that tried to introduce Ebola into the US.

People dying and being paralized from a terrible ilness that can be easily avoided is not sensationalism.
I care for the poeple who contract it in syria, I do not worry about the US, everybody is immune there.

Yes it is. It's everywhere. That's the point of my post. You shouldn't fear people bringing it to the US, because it's here. No one contracts it cuz the thing doesn't evolve. So people would be bringing something that's already here. IE it's a NONSTORY, IE sensationalism. It's a terrible disease, I'm not refuting that. Don't put words in my mouth.

To the "poster" that told me I minimalist like those saying about Ebola needs t get a clue. Polio is a bacteria, Ebola is a virus. Study the differences. They've only been known for most of modern civilization....

It's correct to fear and take steps against Ebola. Not polio. Don't act on emotion and ignorance. Look at the ******n evidence and realize what's a threat and what's hot air sensationalism. My condolences to those affected.

The fact that they can tell it is a "wild virus" shows it is still evolving. Also, it is a virus, not a bacterium as you claim.

If a wild variant of polio breaks out, it is possible it could spread here. Try to avoid spreading your ignorance on this subject any further, as your ilk has done with, for example, whooping cough.

    I stand corrected.

Still doesn't change the fact that polio is here. Everyone's vaccinated though, which is why we don't see new cases.
