Tonight the Prez will be addressing the nation on his plans for the Afghanistan conflict which began on October 7, 2001 - the speech will be given at 9pm Eastern time... I don't expect to hear any talk about a troop "surge" in Afghanistan and I certainly don't want to hear it. We never needed 100,000 troops in that country and never will. What are your thoughts?
If he doesn't include non-military solutions along with a troop escalations, I will simply conclude this is just a shinny penny moment of political BS to pander to his base. We'll have to see what he says.
Short of withdrawal I don't see much room for a major strategy shift. I expect he'll add some more troops and tinker around the margins, i.e., changes to the ROE, etc....
No major changes. He has no say anyway. It's neocons who decide.More troops, more American bliood spilt, more tax payer money wasted etc...Someone needs to protect a lucrative drug trade,eh!
I plan to watch it because I am very curious what this administration's plans are for Afghanistan. I can't even predict because the admin is now heavily tipped with military guys and I don't know what their views are. But it will be an interesting speech. I'm with you on the number of troops there. I'm no military expert but it seems to be way too high for that vast wasteland.
Afghanistan is definitely a geostrategic backwater and as long as the Taliban remain Pakistan's proxy in that country and can move back and forth across the Af-Pak border we can never win that war. The best we can do is keep jihadist groups like AQ and ISIS from using it as a base of operations like OBL did during the late 90's early 2000s.
I'm surprised this hasn't generated more comments....the president who said stop wasting money there is sending more troops?
I think it's very telling that Bannon left shortly before this announcement...also the mention of a broader South Asia plan... having a broader South Asia plan doesn't sound to me like he's pulling out, why would you need a plan for an area you are leaving...I think we can expect him to increase troop numbers in Afghanistan and pretty much announce a long term presence.
All partizan rhetoric aside......damned if he does and damned if he does not. No way to really control that region of the globe, many have tried and all have failed. AI drones and surgical strikes can only do so much, I think the US will be there for a while one way or the other.
I agree with Bannon on Afghanistan, but Trump's a puppet at this point. Expect more from Pence and the neoconservatives.
A very large portion of his base wants out of Afghanistan and Iraq, and Syria and everywhere else in the ME. I need to hear about a MAJOR shift in ROE and a very detailed view of winning or losing to be happy. Just like Vietnam, we have been fluttering around with no real mission for over 15 years now. It's time to relay that mission and milestones towards accomplishing that mission. Without those 2 elements, it's just a forgettable presidential address about absolutely nothing.
Like anything else that Trump does or says it will be a load of BS> He will claim that his plan is the best greatest plan ever and that he is a direct decedent of Jesus therefore anyone who disagrees with Trump is an evil liberal home schooled lesbian on steroids.
So far all he said was me, I, me, I, me , i I am a problem solver. He called the terrorists losers. WOW good one turd polisher. He claimed that we will not do nation building. ok let's see. He is attacking the Pakis. OK WORDS WORDS WORDS ARE CHEAP. He claims that India will help us with Afghanistan.
Why should we believe the same Turd who said he will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it. No wall, no Mexico pesos being sent here.
I really tried to make it all the way through the speech since I never made it all the way through one of Obama's, but nope. Gave up. His rhetoric sounded like a 15 year old playing Call of Duty online wrote the script.
