Protesters Take Down and Deface US Flag, Raise Mexican Flag

Well, clearly. That was the main thrust of my post.

 

It means the Mexicans will be fighting it out with the Muslims to see who takes over the USA.

 

The average American has seen worse and has much bigger fish to fry than worry about this.

Maybe it's me, but I am more concerned about my own life than what goes on elsewhere with folks I have never met or care to meet.

 

Probably a joke, but also an outgrowth of the hilarious right-wing delusion of the Islamic Republic of North America. I can't think of any better reason to dismiss anything right-wingers say out of hand than their fear of Muslims in America. It's like being afraid of Serbians.

 

It will still be the USA.

 

If we keep electing Democrats.

 

Is that what is being done, or is the real fiasco going on at the border? Have you ever considered doing something logical that works for a change? We already have businesses saying there is a labor shortage preventing them from doing more business.

 

Yeah, that's probably true. But I have a more complicated take on American political and demographic history than "Americans are just Americans." The Civil War, for example, wasn't just a war between members of a single culture, but a war between groups of different peoples, I would even say ethnic groups.

My grandfather still uses the word "Yanks" or "Yankees" to refer to northerners, usually half-spitting.

 

We Florida crackers say "Snowbirds" in polite company. A Dead giveaway? Socks with sandals.

 

My point is that while it will probably remain the United States, a once minor subculture is going to become a major one. This is very concerning when you look at the mechanics of our elections. I live in the Southwest, where my people, those of mostly-white mostly-southern descent, are living among a growing number of those of mostly-mixed mostly-latino descent. How this interaction plays out will determine the fate of our country, and I see a dark road ahead.

This is the single political issue I'm most worried about.

EDIT: Not actually sure about the "mostly-mixed" remark. Don't think it matters, I'm just a pedant.

 

I'll be dead and gone. America will become what it deserves, just like we get the Gov we deserve. Every great Nation rises and falls. We have had a good run. "Democratic Socialism" will be this Nation's downfall, the writing on the tombstone.

 

Some posters in their usual knee-jerk reactions overlook that the economy plays a major role. Mexico's economy is doing fairly well so there is less migration north. Can't say the same about Central America w/ exception of Costa Rica. Now with the near total collapse of Venezuela, we will likely see a large influx of South Americans into the US. Smart people realize that investment in these poor Latino countries will help stem the tide of immigration into North America. Trump has actually cut aid to Central America. The fool is only worsening the situation. Republicans have a problem thinking through issues since they are very prone to hysteria.

I find conspiracy theories endlessly entertaining. I honestly think these people are being paid off by the Kochs. The Antifa too. It's just too coincidental that the left was very nonviolent until just 2 years ago.

Hmmm... that's funny ... that's exactly what I thought regarding the neo-Nazis. Some liberal billionaire is funding them. The Klan has an aura of being made up of uneducated small-town Walmart shelf-stackers, but the Nazis ... to a frustrated spotty-faced incel they can be portrayed as cool. (It was the conservative humorist PJ O'Rourke who said “No one has ever had a fantasy about being tied to a bed and sexually ravished by someone dressed as a liberal”)

The Anti-Fa phenomenon is just the extreme of a much more significant change in the Left: its abandonment of its traditional belief in Free Speech. In fact, the Left and the Right have switched sides on this issue, in my lifetime. (There has always -- since 1917 -- been a totalitarian wing of the Left, and liberals who were drawn into its orbit. But they really stood out as distinguished from liberals, and from democratic socialists for that matter.)

To see what I'm talking about, check out these folks -- the Campus Anti-Fascist Network. Much more respectable than that group of West Coast layabouts in Portland AntiFa but, if you read their statement carefully, you'll see that they are for shutting down speakers who might cause "physical or mental (my emphasis) harm."

Which could mean almost anyone -- people on my side of the barricades get pretty distressed when someone says God does not exist, or 'Smash the bourgeoisie' or 'the white man is the devil' but they just have to live with it. But of course the Campus Anti-Fascist Network wouldn't dream of shutting down anyone on the Left.

There are still some principled people on the Left who know how dangerous it is to establish the principle that peaceful speech should be subject to the prior censorship of the Pure and Righteous. "First they came for Charles Murray, but I despised his views, so I did nothing..." And good for them. But they carry little weight with the impressionable young, who will grow up to become leaders in society. And then someone will point out that if Mr Murray's speech causes harm, then so do his books. And off we go.

This change -- not so much the practice of violence but the belief that certain ideas are beyond the pale and should be suppressed -- is becoming widespread among liberal academics. It's not the norm yet, but you can see the trend. I believe that even the ACLU, as it has become increasingly-partisan and Leftwing, is preparing to slide away from its prior committment to free speech.

You have no clue how things are in Europe with Muslims, do you? There's a lot more to the threat from Islam than the Russia collusion fairy tale your side was obsessed with.

 

Just to be clear, it sounds as if you are justifying the trashing of the American flag based on the idea of a historical grievance by the same people who are desperately trying to escape Mexico to live and work the country they despise so much?

What? Did you miss the late 1960's? There was a bit of a disturbance in Chicago in 1968, and it wasn't from the John Birch society. The Democrats have been the party of rebellion going back to the Civil War.

 

If foreign aid would fix s***hole countries it would have been done by now, most goes in the pockets of corrupt rulers. Welfare hasn't fixed the South Side of Chicago either.
