Demobrats is the term I use to describe them. I think it fits perfectly!

What your describing is a common practice in the industry; There are various ways to get around it; the most common and depending on viewpoint is, if union, would be to give hours based on seniority; those with the most seniority pick their shifts with guaranteed hours and so forth down the line; all work done in the workplace excepting defined management work would be done by bargaining unit members.

It's hard to bargain with restaurant owners because if not union, you have little or no bargaining power; however if the restaurant is union, then all the legal options are in place. They have a legal obligation to meet and bargain in good faith. The district managers main job is to justify everything corporate headquarters tells him/her to do, so that does not come to me as a surprise. There is no reason why there should not be a minimal staffing requirement which can flucuate during the course of the day based on the flow history of the restuarant. Once you report to work, they have to guarantee you a set amount of hours for the day, whether it be 4, 6 or 8. Either way all the issues you mentioned can be addressed in a labor contract.

Your not alone; in America most workers are hoodwinked everyday by their employers, frustrated because they feel they have no where to turn; they hear only horrible things about unions from their employers and figure that they must be true about all unions, so they write off unionizing almost right on the spot. So they become jaded workers and in many cases blame everyone. Only through education will more people really learn the truth of what unions are really here for and its not what the companies or their mouthpiece attorney's tell you.

Thanks for a very balanced and rational posting. :)

I think it's hilarious that the right wing thinks profit should never be limited, but labor costs not only be limited, but must be driven down continually. Minimum wage is bad. Mega profit is good. :oldman:

Different States have differing minimum wages. I'm perfectly content to allow other States to raise the minimum wage as high as they want. Eleven bucks and hour; why stop there? Go 20! States are supposed to be the laboratories of democracy. Get your state to double it's minimum wage and let the good times roll.

go back in history and learn what brought us out of the last two recessions we was in
between 1960 and 1961 we went into a recession what brought us out was JFK lowering the cooperate and income tax rates
in 1980 we went into another recession and president Reagan did the same thing and scaled back on government regulations that was impeding business growth

I think you forgot when they raised the minimum wage to meet inflation then too.

You can't have a successful business if people can't afford your products.

If only the Fed would start producing gold we could put an end to inflation.

Wages are paid based on the value of the work being done, not the price of the product being manufactured. More often than not today it is the machinery which is performing most of the work, and not the humans operating it. Of course there are humans being paid to produce, maintain and repair the machinery. Some of my friends work for Lockheed, and not a one of them can afford to buy one of the planes they produce.

Other sectors of the economy will be stimulated, so there will be other better jobs for people to get.

How does that work? $9 X 20 (hours) = 180. $11 X 20 (hours) = 220. That's $40 more a week. Now offset that by higher prices due to the higher wages AND higher taxes to pay unemployment for the people laid off, how is that a help. What sector of the economy will be stimulated by that?

Producers know this, which is why some savvy producers will take a temporary cut in profit in order to siphon business away from their competitors. Healthy businesses will survive, while those who are barely getting by will not. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. As someone pointed out, raising the minimum wage acts as a stimulus. More money will circulate in the communities where it's earned. The inflationary effect of minimum wage increases has been shown to be negligible to non-existent. There just aren't enough minimum wage workers to have an overall effect on inflation. Micro-economically speaking, the cost of a burger would go up by pennies, not dollars as some would have you think. Keep in mind that many more people than the total of minimum wage workers get COLA and other raises on a yearly basis. The economy survives. Minimum wage increases are meant to be COLAs, and it's my opinion that minimum wage should be tied to the cost of living.

raising the minimum wage is a death nail to job creation. After the wages get so high, you'll see Gazi's taking pages out of Stalins play book by outlawing tractors. Obama once blamed ATM machines for taking jobs. This is a sure way to make more people dependant on the state for everything and robbing them of there independance. A perfect way to create more drones to support the Gazi machine

Price doesn't automatically go up with wage increases. It could, and eventually, all prices rise, regardless of wages. Supply and demand still determine price, regardless of costs. In any event, look at it this way: Even if we end up with a transfer of funds from consumers to workers, raising the minimum wage will take many workers off of assistance. Then we the consumers will have a choice. Give your money to McDonald's or give it to the government.

Free economies are cyclical. Wages rise, which contributes to higher prices, which calls for higher wages. This happens throughout the economy, not just with minimum wage.

The minimum wage should be the least amount an employer is able to find employees willing to work for. Depending on the job and the needs of the employer it might be very low or very high, but there is no one amount that can be applied to ALL jobs, all employers, all employees, and in every location.

Hell no. The minimum wage today is the reason why 93 million people are out of work.
What we need is a government that isn't every day trying to push businesses to the far east.
Bull(*)(*)(*)(*). In seven years of Obama (THE WORST (*)(*)(*)(*)ING PRESIDENT IN HISTORY) the only thing that has grown is government, the national debt, the welfare state, and the RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.

Obama is a LIAR, so it makes no sense to listen to him about anything.
That's why you liberals always lose the argument. You have NO IDEA how things work in the real world, so when brilliant conservative industrialists create the businesses that produce the high paying jobs, you assume they do so because they OWE it to the workers. Then you have the gall and stupidity to act surprised when those same industrialists react to a Fascist Democrat party government by picking up stakes and relocating to the far east.

America's private sector INVENTED the factory, the business, the product. China was a wilderness, barely able to sustain Bruce Lee's movie making enterprise. It took SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS to make China a viable option to American workers.
This is why you liberals always lose the argument. You have NO IDEA what you're talking about.

    .
China didn't take anything. Democrat policies DROVE the jobs to China.
Once again you show just how stupid liberals truly are. You're comparing today to the beginning of the 20th Century.
Again, you don't know what you're talking about. People ARE making ends meet. 93 MILLION people are making ends meet without having to work, and our GRANDCHILDREN will get the bill.

That's not only wrong, it's monumentally IGNORANT.
It has been tried. And it has FAILED.
