Russia's opposition journalist Arkady Babchenko shot dead in Kiev

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko has died after being shot near his home in Kiev, Ukrainian police say.

Mr Babchenko, 41, was found bleeding at the entrance to his block of flats by his wife and died in an ambulance.

After writing about a crashed Russian military plane in 2016, Mr Babchenko said he received death threats and left his home country.

He first moved to Prague and later to the Ukrainian capital. He was an outspoken critic of the Kremlin.

A former war correspondent, he worked in Kiev as a presenter on Ukraine's channel ATR TV.

A dissident Russian journalist has been shot at his apartment in Kiev in a high-profile murder that police said may have been tied to his reporting.

Arkady Babchenko, a veteran Russian war correspondent, was shot three times in the back as he left his apartment to buy bread. He was found bleeding by his wife. Babchenko, 41, died in the ambulance to the hospital, a government official said.

The killing appeared to be targeted. The gunman had apparently lain in wait for him outside his apartment. The head of Ukraine’s police force said that two motives were being considered: his “professional work and civil position”. Police on Wednesday evening had not named a suspect, but did post a sketch of a bearded man in a baseball hat.

Babchenko had grown highly critical of the Russian government in recent years. He criticised Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea and his support for the separatists of south-east Ukraine. He left Russia in February 2017, writing that it was “a country I no longer feel safe in”.

The killing was the most recent murder of a high-profile dissident in Kiev, a city that has become a refuge for some of Moscow’s most vehement critics, as well as the scene of targeted assassinations that have remained unsolved for years. In 2016, the investigative journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed in a car bombing outside his apartment. Some journalists have claimed that Ukraine’s powerful intelligence agency has sought to stifle the investigation.

Babchenko’s murder quickly attracted international attention. Harlem Désir, the media freedom representative at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, said he was horrified by Babchenko’s death. “I call on Ukraine authorities to conduct immediate & full investigation,” he tweeted.

It surely confused a hell out of many people but actually, it's very clever if you think about it. If they immediately arrested the guy who ordered the murder to the fake killer they would have less evidence than they do now.

Since he was anti Russian, it seems Ukraine wanted to stage another false flag attack so as to blame Russia. Maybe the revelations and questions about the Skripal poisonings, and the uproar after jailing the editor of Rio Navosti in Kiev as a traitor for doing his job and reporting news, made Kiev back down. Who knows?

Arkady Babchenko emerged at a police press conference on Wednesday afternoon in front of journalists who had been expecting updates on the investigation into his murder.

Vasily Gritsak, the head of the Ukrainian security service, told reporters the agency had faked Babchenko’s death to catch people who were trying to kill him.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian police had said Babchenko, a Kremlin critic and veteran Russian war correspondent, was shot three times in the back as he left his apartment to buy bread. A government official told the media that Babchenko, 41, died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Ukraine revealed that it staged the Russian journalist's death as part of inquiry into threats against his life. Russian security forces had recruited a Ukrainian citizen to find hitmen within Ukraine. The citizen approached several acquaintances, including war veterans, offering $30,000 (£22,600) for the contract killing. They then informed Babchenko, apparently determining that the only way to reveal the plotters was to stage a fake hit.

He is apparently anti-Putin-regime, and justly so. I'm very happy that this turned out to be a ruse and that he is evidently very much alive despite the Russian mafia government's efforts.

Oh then it was the Russians again, just like the false flag Scripal poisonings. Oh thanks for letting us know and putting our minds at ease. And here I thought it might be the usual propaganda ruse before an attack, since it's always been traditional during games and when Putin's occupied.

Wasn't it Washington's man Sashkavili who started the war with Georgia by killing the Russian peacekeepers when Putin was at the games in China? And wasn't it Nuland who started the protests and overthrew the legitimate government in Ukraine at the time Putin was occupied at the games in Socchi? I thought it was only logical that Washington's Poroshenko would start the war with Donbas at the time Putin is occupied with the World Cup.
