To be perfectly honest, I have sympathy for Russia's claims to Crimea. Russia spent a great amount of blood and treasure to obtain it and I see no reason why the artificial territorial transfers that were made by the Soviet government should be honored. However, Russia did make a commitment to respect Ukraine's territorial and political sovereignty, so my respect for Russia's claims ends at the Crimean peninsula.

 

This is one of reasons why I try to reach maximal possible clarity with what is going on in Ukraine. Sadly, most of time it gets dismissed as "apologism".

 

A bit of a detail, that is often overlooked. The Budapest memorandum was signed in December of 1994.

The complete inclusion of Crimea in Ukraine, with liquidation of crimean parlament and president have happened in 1995.

So, at time of when the memorandum been signed status of Crimea was not exactly clear.

 

That is pretty much where I sit as well. From what I see I do not think Russia has territorial designs further than Crimea.

Ukraine needs to take serious steps to end the civil war and NATO needs to stop playing political games in the region.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm not Russian. Never been there, but I have worked with and socialized with a few Russians here in the US.

Appeals to emotions such as the one you offer are rather easy to see through. If we all cry often enough, we can excuse any sort of actions.

 

Well then you can't really speak for Russia can you... one thread is them praising their leaders tolerating 1 minute.... repeat .... 1 stupid minute of rain... the next they're throwing their soldiers in unmarked graves. There's plenty of Russians unhappy about it...I found several articles of the mothers of Russian soldiers asking where their sons bodies are. But don't say this on an open forum right... I'd be violating Russia's non-freedom of speech.

 

I have never claimed to be speaking for Russia or Russians. Why you think that I don't know, but it's no big deal.

My point is that the thread consists mostly of an appeal to emotion.

 

Well I disagree on that also, yes it's very emotional for Russian families, but the unmarked graves also underscores current Russian policy of destabilising eastern Ukraine and to continue to deny military involvement, instead referring to them as mercenaries..... there's a lot more there than just emotion in this thread it's what one choose to see.
