It's that bad of a read? I'm a quarter of the way through it now and I would say it's a great story so far.

 

Best book I ever read. To be honest there's little doubt Rand could have used an editor but of course there's also a good reason she refused editing. Some people hate the message and many cannot grasp the message. The world is full of detractors who have never even seen the book much less read it.

 

I've read the book two times, and abandoned a third reading nearly halfway through.

It was a powerful treatise, at a certain point in my personal evolution.

The first time I read it, it was like scales falling from my eyes. Very powerful. I have since grown to a point where I still respect Rand for what she was, in the time she lived, but I take it with the proverbial grain of salt.

To be perfectly honest, her writing skill leaves a lot to be desired. But her ideas are pretty profound.

Yes some salt is required. That's only logical. One of Rands tenants is every person must live their life by their own rational logic concluded by what they personally understand to be fact. Given that view point there's no way everyone would ever come to the same exact conclusions as Rand. She has stated several times that was never her intent. She merely wanted everyone to THINK about the path they took in life with rational logic instead of emotional fidgeting.

John Galt is every person in any country with a job that asks the question. "Why am I being punished"

The logic I used couldn't possibly be as pathetic as the logic you used to label people you've never met or even laid eyes on as "angry" and "stupid" because of a bumper sticker on their car. Perhaps you aren't qualified to determine what is and isn't "pathetic logic"?

 

I didn't expect you to suddenly become logical in response, and I was right.

 

The John Galt thing comes and goes - usually following the way our society is going. As it appears to become more collectivist, more people embrace Rand's individualist principles. As it becomes more individualist, they let it go. You see similar things as the country swings the other way - more FDR quotes start showing up.

It's just a bit of a barometer of how people perceive our society.

 

I didn't expect you to be able to reply with anything other than your usual vapid snark. I was not disappointed in the least, though it would be refreshing to see an in-the-tank partisan string together an actual supported argument for once.

 

I love, love, love FDR quotes. Here's one of my favorites:

"I don't care if they're Americans. Eff the Constitution, I want all of the Nips and Guineas in concentration camps, now!"

Actually it can be demonstrated to be unlikely, if nothing else. Here's the logic of it; if only angry and stupid people had John Galt bumper stickers on display then they would also be stupid and angry enough to put really outrageous stickers up as well -- such as -- "F*ck Obama and his Democratic Party!" But they generally do no such thing, thus one can argue that they are lacking in either the necessary element of anger or stupidity or both.
